30 minute naps 6 months

My boy is 6 months in a week and I'm teaching to settle after a kiss and a song for day naps which is working great but I cant get him to sleep longer than 30 minutes. I've tried rouse to sleep but I just wake him and then he's up and chatting. Next I guess leaving him for a while to see if he'll just go back to sleep but I'm not hopeful as I've done 10 mins of that and he gets so upset but is clearly still tired. Any advice? If his naps stay at 30 mins, do I just need to do them every 2/3 hours so he's getting enough day sleep until he naps longer??

Wake time is about 2 hours for a 6 month old baby.
Also, 30 minute naps are normal, as babies reach 8-9 months their naps tend to get longer

My lo is seven and a half months and just like this. She has just started to babble and crawl backwards and Ive noticed this has increased her naps? Maybe she's tired herself out more? Also took her swimming for 40 mins on Wednesday and she was kicking the whole time and then had a two hour nap?!? Unprecedented!! Im beginning to think the more active she gets the better she will nap? Not sure if that's much help to you but like pp said maybe a light at end of tunnel when they are a bit older xx

Thank you! Swimming is great! What confuses me is the 2 hours of wake time but the need for 3.5 hours sleep a day. With 30 min naps every two hours based on a 12 hour day that's time for 4 naps which is only 2 hours. And that's assuming they go straight to sleep when you put them down... which they do not! Lol. I was told he should be having 30 mins at 9.30, 2 hours at 12.30 and 30 mins at 4.30 if he does 7 until 7. I'll hold tight then and try selling after his 30 minute wake up to see if he starts lining cycles, until he starts going longer! Fingers crossed! Xxx

I attempted to follow the same sleep program with an adamant catnapper - although DS would do a 45 minute cycle rather than a 30 minute one, which helped.

He started linking his cycles reliably at 11 months, he got by on far less sleep than he was 'supposed' to have. I found fixing the night sleep fixed the day sleep, but every baby is different.

Ah ok that's god to hear! If I've learnt anything from it it's that he needs a nap every 3 hours max and as long as I can get him down in the morning for 30 mins and resettled at least once in the afternoon (giving him two cycles) then a late afternoon nap, we should be good! It's just the linking cycles that's holding us back! Did you use 'little ones'? He is quite good at night but does wake around 3 or 4 for his dummy and is then up at 6! X

It sounds like you are doing great, just try your best to help your lo get what they need that's all you can do! Sometimes she napped and sometimes she didn't but I tried to always create a napping environment when I felt they should have one and not stress if they didnt!! I'm sure your lo will get the hang of it nore soon xx

My DS is 8 months next week. He will only nap for 30 mins at a time too. When he wakes from his lunch nap I always try and resettle him for another 30-60mins whenever possible

rachel200811 · 15/03/2020 16:10

Thank you everyone! Giraffe888, yes I do the same! On a good day I can get 30 mins in the morning and late afternoon and at least an hour over lunch. Next on my list is getting that dummy gone... and then the sleepyhead!!!! Wish me luck! X
