My ds is 1 year and 2 weeks old. He has always been a great sleeper but for the last 3 nights he has woken up between 1-1.30am. At first his dummy sends him back to sleep but then he struggles to settle. It seems as though he is still asleep at first, but then he wakes and cries. Last night it lastedfrom 1.30am until 3am off and on.

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions to what may be causing ot or how to stop it? Please

have you tried wake to sleep? sounds crazy but it works
(Baby Whisperer recommends it)

Basically, 1 hour before baby's usual wake up, you need to wake them up. Rouse them enough so they are nearly fully awake and then leave them to fall back to sleep

The theory is that this disrupts the old sleep cycle, so they sleep through their usual wake up

you need to do it for 3 nights

I did it with my DS as he started waking at 5.30 am every morning, so i had to get up at 4.30 am (so i feel your pain)

to wake my DS up, i would untuck him, stroke his cheeks and arms - nothing too scary

DH suggested chucking a bucket of cold water over him

so you don't want to try wake to sleep then?

Sorry ds got a hold of the laptop!!! sounds like an option, does your lo settle again straight away? when our ds wakes it can be anything up to 2 hours before he will go back to sleep again iyswim

pesky kids LOL!
my DS used to settle straight back to sleep
because you are disrupting their old sleep cycle, usual behaviours may be broken too

a good thing about this is that you take control

worth a go IMHO

thankyou RS, i have tried to give ds everything he has had in the past and know he has no adverse reaction to all day iykwim - usul food, biscuits juice etc. He has had quite a lot of new things lately and it had crossed our minds that he was having strange dreams. (do children this young even have dreams )

If he wakes tonight i will certainly give your method a go tomorrow night!! thank you for your advice

it doesn't take much to unsettle a baby and make them more wakeful
walking or learning new skills, a new playgroup etc
i don't know if babies dream per se, but they use sleep and night time to process things
hope things improve

Just popping into say hi

No advice on this though - but I really feel for you as you think the sleepless nights should be over by the time they are 1 don't you?

Just going to watch Supernanny - will catch you later if you are around.

REIDmylips · 06/09/2007 09:13

YEY he slept last night!

Hopefully it was just a very short phase! fingers crossed.

(waves at ceebee even though its a little too late)
