4.5 month old waking after an hour wriggling

4.5 month old DS is EBF, I boob him to sleep around 8.30pm and he goes into next to me crib and will sleep for a couple of hours, wakes at 10.30ish and DH will resettle him, then wakes around 11.30pm for feed at which point I take over.

He has some reflux so I burp well and hold upright after feeds, can’t feed lying down for this reason which is rubbish! He’ll generally sleep for an hour after each feed and then start wriggling and shuffling and basically wake himself up. He will settle on the boob but I’m reluctant to give it to him as he’s not hungry and whilst I know that comfort nursing is very valid, it means he takes on some milk anyway and then I need to get up and hold him upright and the whole cycle starts again.

I feel like I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place as we usually bedshare but then the wiggling keeps me awake (and poss the flat mattress makes reflux worse?) but if I put him in the next to me crib (on a wedge) I lie there on tentahooks and can’t get to sleep as I know he’ll wake and needs me right there in full bodily contact to get back to sleep, he won’t settle in the next to me and I need to take him out.

I’m starting to go slightly mad with the lack of sleep as it takes me ages to get back to sleep after feeds especially now I know that as soon as I’m dropping off he’s going to wake up wriggling. I basically don’t sleep between 11.30pm and 6am which is when DH takes him again for an hour or two before work.

Is this wriggling normal? Is my difficulty falling asleep with baby in next to me crib normal?! Does anyone have any tips??

Should add that I don’t think it’s the 4 month regression as it’s been like this for ages! Feed, sleep for an hour, wiggle for an hour, feed again (so feeding every 2 hours, has done since birth)....

Support op. No advice here but wanted to say the ‘wriggling’ is making me smile. Poor you. I am going through insomnia phase - bereavement related. Sleep deprivation is driving me crazy too !

Is baby on any medication for the reflux? Maybe it’s bothering him and that’s why he’s wriggling.
Will he take a dummy? A dummy made a huge difference to my baby with reflux, it stopped the feeding for comfort, it’s not for everyone but might be worth a try to see if it settles him for a little longer.
That being said very few ebf babies go for longer than 3 hours overnight at that age

Not tried a dummy yet...

Tried gaviscon but no joy, not too keen on raniditine as he doesn’t seem painful, just the wiggling! Maybe it’s just lighter phase of sleep as last night he was thrashing around in my arms whilst still being held upright almost an hour after feeding!

It’ll be wind/reflux making him uncomfortable. My son was similar.
Try a dummy. If that doesn’t work you might need omeprozole (ranitidine has been withdrawn at the mo).

I have no expertise but would swaddling work?
