Help / advice wanted

Hi, I’m a first time mum with a 4 week old DS (darling son). He’s sleeping in a next to me crib and I find that I need to check on him during the night (when I turn over / wake etc). But to do this, I’ve been leaving a lamp on. I really don’t want to get him used to sleeping with a light on but I don’t feel I can turn it off and keep an adequate check on him throughout the night! Am I being silly and should I just try turning the lamp off?!? Any help or advice would be really appreciated, thanks Smile

Would a small plug in night light give enough light to see? Or would listening to him be sufficiently reassuring?

I can totally understand checking on him when you stir but I’d imagine you’d both sleep better in the dark and it’d be good not to get him in the habit of sleeping with a light on (though really, that’s too young to develop a habit I think).

I completely feel your pain, it took me ages to stop waking every hour to poke my wee girl and check shes OK. Rather than keeping the light on, could uou try reaching over ans gently putting a hand on his chest to check his breathing? That's what i do now.

I just use the light on my phone to check when I wake up if he ever sleeps long enough for me to worry!

We used a gro egg for DD, keeps an eye on the temperature and is a very low light just enough to check on her

I have a plug in motion light so I could see when checking my baby.

Thanks all. The lamp I have is quite far away from our bed (I have an odd shaped room, similar to a square 'p' if that makes sense) and the crib is in the furthest corner away so it is quite a low light. We tried to set up a sensor mat today in hope of turning the lamp off but I've just realised they don't work with a next to me crib Sad I just don't think I'm brave enough yet to turn the lamp off Sad

I second some kind of night light. My dh has a bluetooth speaker that has a little light on it. He has it on his side of the bed (dd is in basket on my side) in the corner of the room, with books in front of it and a muslin over the top to dim it even further. It gives out just enough light for me to see dd, but not enough to disturb any of us. We also leave the bathroom light on with bathroom door slightly ajar (mainly in case our 4 year old dd needs to get up for a wee), and if I need to do a nappy change then I just crank our door open a tiny bit to let in just enough light to see what I'm doing.
