HELP! baby chokes himself at nighttime!

Hi.

My baby is 11 weeks old. Recently in the evenings before bedtime he has started becoming so unsettled after his feed and change and nothing will calm him down. He screams and screams until eventually he chokes himself brings a load of formula up and then he will sleep. What can we do to help him?

  • He only does it at nighttime
  • We use anticolic bottles with vari flow teats (but he will do it on any test)
  • He has no wind
  • Once he's brought it up he's completely fine and will settle

It sounds as though he’s having trouble digesting. I think this is worth a call to the HV.

DD used to get painful wind in the evening that needed to travel down rather than up! It took me weeks to work out the problem. Cycling her legs and pushing knees into chest pushed the wind out and then she was fine.

Do you do paced feeding?

slipperywhensparticus · 15/01/2020 20:24

Prop him up? My sons had reflux and spent a lot of evenings propped up

mum1997 · 15/01/2020 20:39

@Selfsettling3 yes we do

@INeedNewShoes thank you! I will give them a call.

@slipperywhensparticus we do but it doesn't calm him, we have to sort of hold him forward to make sure he brings everything up when he chokes.

Have you tried using different bottles that reduce intake of air while baby is drinking?

Tommy tippee bottles were terrible for this with DD and we found MAM much better.

mum1997 · 15/01/2020 21:18

@INeedNewShoes tommee tippee is what he's had from day one and they've never caused him any issues. But it's just since this is happening I don't know what is it. Maybe it is worth me trying a new bottle he does love his mam dummies so I think he would like it!

Could it be cmpa?

Constantlurker · 15/01/2020 21:23

We used the MAM bottles and found them brilliant. There are also the Dr Brown bottles. Does sound like a bit of air in his tummy is making him feel poorly. Hope he's ok soon!

Constantlurker · 15/01/2020 21:25

Maybe also keep an eye out for CMPA signs. DS had it and he used to scream.bloody murder after a feed, bring up a lot and his skin was very dry, had all the symptoms. We had to go on prescribed formula which changed him overnight.

mum1997 · 15/01/2020 21:39

@Constantlurker I have noticed when he eats his stomach rumbles but I always though maybe it was because he was trying to take it a bit too fast. He has gotten very dry skin on his face and he has patches of what looks like eczema round his eyebrows but it doesn't clear up with moisturising it

When we used to feed DS, he'd take a few mouthfuls and then arch his back and scream bloody murder, we'd wind him for hours but he'd be so uncomfortable. Maybe check on the NHS site about CMPA symptoms and just keep an eye on him. I found that the GP wasn't particularly interested in diagnosing CMPA. I did have to take a list of symptoms in with me and a video of him reacting to formula, and the doctor literally googled CMPA symptoms in front of me and and went oh maybe you're right let's try a prescribed formula. Really frustrating but I stuck to my guns and he was a new baby when we moved onto neocate. Funnily enough though, it was short lived, he's now happily on solids and drinking all the cows milk in the world and eats cheese like a fiend. So it doesn't necessarily mean it's forever if it is CMPA. Good luck!!

I would ask gp for some dairy free formula to trial
