Congested baby will only sleep on tummy

Hi all

My DS is 5.5 weeks old and has had a cold courtesy of his big brother for almost 3 weeks now and the congestion doesn't seem to be getting any better.

Up until he caught the cold he would sleep on his back but now he will only sleep on his tummy and preferably on my chest. When he is put down on his back he wakes within 5-10mins coughing, spluttering and sounds so congested.

I have raised his cot, tried nasal drops and an aspirator but nothing seems to work. In order to get some sleep myself I have resorted to sleeping with him on my chest with myself wedged into position so I don't move but I hate doing this and I know it's not safe.

Has anyone had a similar experience and found something that helped? I've been reading about silent reflux and wondering if he has this as some of the symptoms fit but he is generally a fairly content baby and doesn't seem to be crying with pain from any milk coming back up. Although sometimes he does look like he has a bad taste in his mouth.

I just want to be able to put him down safely and us all to get some proper sleep.

Any advice really appreciated!

My DS is now 5 months but we had similar issues around this time and it did turn out to be silent reflux. At first it started off as sounding generally congested and coughing and spluttering when flat. But then as time went by his feeding got fussier and fussier until around 9 or 10 weeks we got him prescribed ranitidine and he was such a different baby afterwards! Worth a trip to the GP to ask about it.
