Hi all.
In march I am travelling to Spain with my daughter who will be almost 1.... I am absolutely stressing about it.
The flight is at 6.40am, so not only will she be tired and grumpy, i will be aswell.
Any tips for travelling with babies, how to get everything packed well, keeping kids calm and happy, how to get milk through security etc (my list could go on as a do not know where to start!)

Do you have a sling you can use at the airport? Much easier than a buggy or carrying her.

Milk can just be carried through as normal.

A sling. Soft clothes, thin layers. Snacks. Check in as much of your luggage as possible. If you breastfeed, plan to do so on the plane as much as possible. If you bottle feed, there may be rules about milk, but I don't know them.
If there's a family/assistance lane at security, use it.
If her poo is still loose, and you use disposable nappies, consider using a reusable wrap over her nappy - poo leaks and full clothes changes on an aeroplane changing table are things you want to avoid.

I'd suggest pull up nappies and an iPad of anything that would entertain her. Does she have her own seat on the plane?

I carried mine on my back in a sling. Breastfeed or use dummy at take off and landing to stop little ears popping. Bring iPad with downloads on it, books and some treats like chocolate buttons for when everything else fails! Only carry the minimum stuff on the plane with you, check your buggy and all your main holiday stuff. Have loads of drinks and snacks and things for you both. Have a lovely holiday!

Spain is only 2 hours ? You'll be fine. Just get them to suck on some thing during take off (bf is ideal for this ) and get a new toy to distract

Snacks snacks and more snacks! Specifically, the melty puff sticks from ella’s kitchen or aldi do a really good melty puff. Also, take the sling so you can walk up and down the aisle for baby to sleep in.

Milk I think you can take with you on board but otherwise you might be able to order from boots and collect airside at the airport? Might be worth checking.

Check if there is an aldi/lidl near where you are staying for wipes/nappies so you can buy there instead of taking stuff with you.

If you are taking a car seat, you can buy a car seat travel bag from amazon and stuff loads of nappies/wipes/ extra baby stuff in with the car seat in the bag.

Baby might be grumpy for a bit but she’ll be excited by all the new things and faces so she’ll be ok!

Most air stewards are great on flights and generally love holding babies so take let them hold the baby for a bit if you need a break.

It honestly won’t be as bad as you think and even if baby is grumpy it will be worth it once you get to glorious Spain! Have a lovely time!

Sideshowjen · 30/12/2019 23:05

Oh, it’s also worth taking a small bag full of favourite toys and letting baby have a rummage in the bag!

Agree here that it will be easier than you think. I have flown often with my daughter, from about 6mths. She has always enjoyed it and when she was tiny she got loads of attention and loved looking at all the people. Or slept. Most airport security just get you to taste milk/food. There will be specific guidelines online depending where you fly from.

Different to other people, I always found having a buggy helpful. Once through security walking around the airport was easy if she was in one and you can take the buggy right to the plane. Potentially a long time to be in a carrier if no buggy. Depends on your usual preferences I think.

Worth considering taking car seat or not depending on what your travel plans are in Spain. It doesn’t cost extra.
