MentalHealth101 · 28/12/2019 11:09

23 months old and still with the night wakings every two/3 hours :-D sorry!

Doyoumind · 28/12/2019 11:09

How long is a piece of string? It will totally depend on your baby. Are you breastfeeding?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/12/2019 11:10

DS was 3. Years that is not months.

Oly4 · 28/12/2019 11:10

Three kids, never before age 2 usually. They do get there though!

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 28/12/2019 11:10

Piece of string.

Baby 1: 9 weeks. (Bottle fed)
Baby 2: 16 months Hmm (breast fed)

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/12/2019 11:11

Completely depends on the child

Lizzie840 · 28/12/2019 11:11

Mine was 5 months.

DeanImpala67 · 28/12/2019 11:13

My first from 8 weeks, the second was 14 months. I took sleeping through to mean doing 8 hrs without waking. If I'd had my second one first I doubt I'd have had another so quickly!!

Mrsducky88 · 28/12/2019 11:13

My 2.5 year old generally sleeps through 8 hours now but still the odd night where she wakes more often and when she is ill it’s often every 1-2 hours. Cosleeping was my saviour before that, she went into her own bed at 20 months no problems.

PorpentinaScamander · 28/12/2019 11:13

Ds1 was about 3 years.
Ds2... dunno. But he stopped waking me up when he came into my bed in the middle of the night at about 7.

CmdrCressidaDuck · 28/12/2019 11:14

Usually somewhere between birth and never.

You're welcome!

Seriously though, I'm afraid the range of "normal" is absolutely huge. Some babies go long stretches from birth, some 5yos still wake frequently (although at that age you usually don't have to do anything about it). A huge amount depends on the baby, their temperament and personality. Nor does anyone really agree on what "sleep through" means. For me it means, at least, no wakes between 11pm and 6:30/7am, i.e. I don't have to get out of bed to deal with them, and preferably I don't hear from them at all from 7-7.

It's normal for small babies to wake in the night for milk for at least 6 months. Mine both "slept through" in the 12 hour sense fairly reliably from 18 months or so. Some people will say theirs did 12 hours from 8 weeks or so, but this is the far side of the bell curve and if yours doesn't sleep long stretches for much longer it isn't because you did anything wrong. Frankly, many people also misremember their own children's early days as much rosier and more placid than they really were, and/or have unrealistic expectations based on the days of regimented formula feeding. (My own mother now swears all 6 of us "never cried"; one of my sisters was literally famous as a baby terror!)

Things will get better and you will sleep again.

DammitCarlton · 28/12/2019 11:15

Mine slept through from 11 weeks to 6 months. Then teething and sleep regression kicked in and we currently have to deal with about 2 wake ups a night at 9 months old. No feeds between 7pm and 7am since 16 weeks old.

happycamper11 · 28/12/2019 11:15

DD1 was 7 weeks old, DD2 is 6 (years) and still wakes at least once. There are no rules

Pilot12 · 28/12/2019 11:19

My son was 18 months when he started sleeping from 7pm to 6.30 am. I didn't sleep train, he just started doing it himself. It was around this time that he dropped his daytime naps so I guess he was more tired!

MrsMillerbecameababy · 28/12/2019 11:21

toebeanz what does sleep through mean is the crucial question indeed. Some people say sleep through when they mean that the baby only wakes for feeds! Apparently the professional definition is 5 solid hours. Five, not eight or twelve.

Also there's the difference between doing it occasionally and reliably. My eldest slept through once at 13 weeks but didn't do it again until I actively night weaned at 9 months. My youngest actually woke more and was almost impossible to get back to sleep after night weaning.

For being put to bed and not disturbing us til morning mine were:

Dc1 10 months, but then stopped from 18 months to 2, slept through again from 2 years.

Dc2 from about 8 months though there was also a sleepless phase for about two months after that, I forget exactly when.

Dc3 from age 3 - by far the worst sleeper up countless times every night despite the same routine as dc2.

My biggest tip to survive it is not to wake yourself up fully when attending to the baby/ toddler. Don't use the internet in the middle of the night or turn all the lights on. Don't look at the clock. Attend to the baby and go back to bed.

Mayvis · 28/12/2019 11:22

When he started primary school aged 4.5 years.

Absolute nightmare baby and toddler - wake ups every 40 mins for 11 long months. Complete dream at bedtime now, age 6.

troppibambini · 28/12/2019 11:23

11 weeks
6 months
6 weeks
4 years

Last one was obviously broken.

20viona · 28/12/2019 11:25

Every child is so different my daughter was about 12 weeks when she no longer needed a bottle in the night and slept through.

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/12/2019 12:24

To add to this - it’s normal for people of all ages to wake in the night. Very few of us have constant 7-8 hour stretches of not waking, but we’re told everyone sleeps this much. It’s a myth. We’re not always aware we’re waking though, it might even be for a few minutes, or we know how to get ourselves back to sleep easy which is what babies don’t have. A more realistic view of sleep would do us all a favour

toebeanz · 28/12/2019 15:23

Mine is nearly a month. I know it's a long way off yet Smile

Sttn is going to bed in the evening and not waking up til the morning. Dc1 - started at 7 months but a fair few blips until 17 months.

Dc2 started at 6 weeks but only consistent from 5 months

mrsed1987 · 28/12/2019 15:30

My lo slept through from 8 weeks but has days when he wakes up a couof time for his dummy to be put in. I still refer to it as sleeping through

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 28/12/2019 15:31

In my experience, when they're in a room of their own.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 28/12/2019 15:31

Dc1 slept 7-7 from 5 weeks old
Dc2 slept 7-7 from 7 weeks old
