Hi please can someone help me.....my 4week old will only sleep in the carrycot part of the pram. When it comes to nighttime he won’t settle upstairs. How do I get him to go into the crib/cot we do bath time, I keep the room warm even tried a hot water bottle inside before him. But as soon as 1am feed he won’t settle and we’re up all night. Please help

Is he settling in the cot at the beginning? After the bath etc? Or is it just at 1am he won't settle in the cot? In terms of temperature, it could be a little too warm perhaps? Babies like to sleep in cool rooms (between 16-20 degrees) apparently!

I know he has trapped wind. We use infacol Dentonox, gripe water. But he’s just so unsettled the only place he’s ok is the pram. We bring him downstairs and he settles. I’m desperate

Do you rock the pram whilst he is in it, is that why he is more settled? Or does he just prefer the carry cot of the pram itself? Could you just take that upstairs and he could sleep in that overnight?

Put the carrycot in the crib

Selfsettling3 · 17/12/2019 13:46

Can you get a Moses basket for upstairs?

Most babies will only sleep with Mum overnight.

The carrycot is probably a lot more snug and makes him feel safe whereas the cot is big and scary to him. I'd start by trying to get him sleeping in carrycot inside cot and go from there

Loulablake · 17/12/2019 14:07

It’s just the carrycot part, we don’t rock him and he just goes straight in and sleeps through out the day, but we struggle at night. After his bath we feed him, but I haven’t tried the cot as we was told 6mnths so I guess I was to nervous too.

Only vista and bugaboo pram bassinets are suitable for overnight sleeping.

Have you tried a sleepyhead inside the cot?

Loulablake · 17/12/2019 19:00

I’ve ordered a Moses basket. To try that. He just gets so upset and sobs but when you put him in the carrycot he sleeps straight away. I’ve put it in the cot and he’s still asleep so it’s not my decorating he has issues with lol I’ve even tried those sleep pods in the next to me crib that helped to start but after his 1am feed he won’t go back in and I won’t cosleep to afraid too xx

Sleepyhead inside cot is not deemed safe, it's much safer to co-sleep if that's an option. Lullaby trust has information on how to do that safely.

Read about the 4th trimester to get a better understanding of your baby's behaviour, also look at Sarah Ockwell-Smith regarding gentle techniques.

We bought a Moses basket and he’s sleeping in that now and I’ve put it in the cot on a night. after Christmas I’ll try making him nap in his cot. I’ve stopped using the sleepy head, that is what we had.

My first baby was just like this and I ended up using a sleepyhead which did work for a while but is not recommended and I got it out of the crib with my new baby as soon as health visitor scared me! I then decided to put a massive Muslin over the sheet in her bed and it worked, so far, Muslin is much softer and warmer to the baby than a sheet can be, sounds mad but it worked! 4 weeks is still tiny so the bed will seem massive to them so the carry cot will be nice and cosy, I'd recommend trying a Muslin in the Moses basket. You can get them for less than £5 on eBay, they don't have to be the really expensive ones! Good luck, hope you get some sleep soon x

Thank you

Have you tried a sleepyhead? It was a game changer for us! Or a self made cocoon using towels or blankets? Babies like feeling snuggled (as someone mentioned, read about the 4th trimester)

Just to say it's completely normal for your baby not to sleep anywhere but on you or in the car/pram for a while - it will change! So what you have to do to get through even if that means a bit of cosleeping!

Agree put Moses basket inside cot so he gets used to it. Have you got baby sleeping bag?
