Swaddle blanket recommendations

I have a an average size 7 week old, really struggling to stop his arms bashing him awake at night. I tried swaddling at the beginning in a gro swaddle blanket with little success but he hated it and fought his way out. I want to try it again just in case it’s the magic solution (🙏) to a better nights sleep!

Any recommendations? Especially from those who have had anti-swaddle bubs in the past!

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for swaddle recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best swaddles page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful.

I used giant square muslins. Fold into a triangle and then wrap like a burrito. Lay them onto the loose end.

We bought them from amazon for DS2, they were like a cotton triangle with Velcro, I can't remember the brand though.

Saying that, I advise anybody who asks not to buy them!! My DS was the works worst sleeper, he didn't sleep through even once until after he turned two, was very unsettled and just could smooth himself at all. I honestly believe that using sleep 'props' like swaddling (we did other things too) contributed to this.

Sorry, spelling!

Swaddling has been the answer over here!

SwaddleMe velcro wraps are great and easy to use. When ready to transition out you can just let one arm out then the other but keep the wrap tight around the chest. You can then loosen a little (obviously not too loose to be dangerous) until you are ready to pop in a sleeping bag instead.

We're also using the love to dream arms up swaddles. In the day she has a 1 tog. For night we have the 2.5 tog with arms you can remove for when we are ready to start transitioning into sleeping bag. Plus she looks like a tiny cactus which is adorable.

Love the image of a tiny cactus 😂
Went to mothercare today, was a bit disappointed with the choice so ended up with a grosnug, at least if he doesn’t take to it I can just use it as a grobag afterwards. Wish me luck!

@Jeb86 we also have a grosnug! The ollie the owl one. Wasn't as successful as either of the others but was ok. We did try her sleeping in it with arms out the other day for 2 nights but she flapped all night and didn't sleep very well so went back to the cactus.

Hopefully attached our 3 different types!

We had a grosnug which worked for a while until DS could bunch the top part up under his chin in his efforts to wiggle free, I think it got too small quickly and he wasn’t a big baby

We have since been using an Ergobaby Swaddle Wrap with the Velcro top bit and sack like bottom bit - nervous for when the time will shortly come to transition out of it as he sleeps so well Sad (he’s just turned 15 weeks)
Would probably try a Lovetodream as a transition as arms will be up and more free with rolling

Biscuitsandteaplease · 27/11/2019 13:26

Slightly high-jacking here, sorry! @Mizydoscape does your DD still have a dummy with the cactus swaddle? I’m concerned that my DS would be knocking it out every 2 minutes in this one and the idea of evicting the dummy and changing the swaddle at the same time makes me really nervous..

Celebelly · 27/11/2019 13:28

We started with Grosnugs but quickly changed to the LoveToDream arms up bags and she wore those until about 6 months. They're really good and have the added bonus of making your baby look like a tiny bank hostage.

Mizydoscape · 27/11/2019 16:34

@Biscuitsandteaplease yeah she does knock it out sometimes but not as often as I would think. She tends to sleep stiller in it if that makes sense.

Hi OP, we used the swaddleme ones initially with DD but in hindsight I wished we’d used one recommended as ‘hip healthy’ - basically your baby’s legs should still be able to lie in their natural ‘froggy’ position, the swaddle shouldnt restrict them anywhere below the hips ideally.

We moved on to a halo sleep sack which has more of a ‘bag’ at the bottom. Added bonus that it zips up like a normal bag and then had Velcro swaddle straps that go over the top, so you can secure them in various different ways to wean them off swaddling when they start rolling: Halo Sleepsack Swaddle Cotton Sleepsuits (Pink, 0 - 3 Months) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001D7E0WS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JZx4DbETJJ94C?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
