7 month old not sleeping in cot

Tonight I have been up since 3.50am trying to put my 7 month old son down to sleep. He is fast asleep in my arms, then wide awake when I put him in the cot.

Daytime naps are also a mess. He sleeps in my arms for 1hr15 in the morning then 30 mins each in the pram at lunch and late afternoon. All for the same reason as above.

Nighttime is usually better than the day but just feel it's all getting worse.

I'm anxious now as I go back to work next month and don't know how I'll function.

Just needed to vent.

That sounds exhausting. Does he ever fall asleep in the cot by himself, rather than being put in it already asleep? I don't know about other babies, but mine would definitely wake up if he was asleep in my arms and I then tried putting him down in the cot. I have to put him in the cot awake and let him put himself to sleep.

I hope you get some better sleep tonight!

A couple of things that helped me, albeit with a younger baby:

Have the baby in their blanket or sleeping bag while they're on your shoulder. Helps them notice less of a change in the environment (temperature, texture, feeling of being wrapped up)

Lean right into the cot with the baby when you put them down. Same reason.

Make sure you're supporting their spine so they don't get a falling sensation.

@Lizzie840 I've never been able to put him down awake. Tried, but never had any success sadly.

@ScarletGlow already doing both of these things. Thanks for the tips though.

Fingers crossed for a better night tonight.

Are you putting down feet first? So lowering at an angle? Feet then legs, bum, and head last, seems to help.

What's your baby's preferred sleeping position? DD likes to sleep on her side – she'll wake up if I transfer her on her back but stay asleep if I put her on her side, then gently roll her on to her back to meet the guidelines. Whereupon she then rolls and shuffled into her preferred croissant position anyway.
