Me again.
You can tell ive been up last night thinking about what to do about dd's sleep probs.
Anyway DD is 17 weeks and learnt to roll on her front. During the night she was rolling on her side which was ok but now she has started to roll on her belly to sleep. I am petrified that she is at risk of sids. I tried 5 times last night to put her back on her back but she rolls straight back over. During the day she can lift her head off the ground but at night what she does is roll over on to her belly and then turn her face to the opposite side all the time rolling it against the mattress she doesnt lift her head off the matress. Any I worrying over nothing?

All the advice I've heard is that once they've learned to roll themselves, sleeping on their front is absolutely fine, in fact it seems to be THE preferred sleeping position for babies.

I continued to put dd down on her back for ages, but she took to immediately rolling onto her front.

thats's what I heard too - once they can roll over themselves it's ok. i know when my ds has slept longer than normal - he's on his tummy when i go in to wake him. would love to put him down at night on his tummy - but am too scared to.

It's amazing how trends change - dd, and 2ds's all slept on their tummies - it was deemed safe way back then and thought that if they vomited gravity would send it onto the cot and not back down their throats and cause choking (seems sensible even now!) All 3 survived with no problems. I know because of cot deaths the advice is just the opposite today but I think if your ds is turning over herself she must be comfortable on her tummy - I understand why you're worrying but I don't think you should she'll be fine!

the advice in hospitals in Spain is to put them on their bellies to sleep from birth.

ps i wish i could sleep on my tummy again! haven't ben able to since being pregs and now boobies are too big/in the way!

Kbaby, can understand why you are worried, although like others have said, if she can roll herself then she should be ok. Could you maybe get one of those monitors with a sensor pad. We had one for DD and still use it for ds who is now 17 months! They are a bit pricey but I think you can get the Angelcare monitor for about £50/£60 from Argos (I think). I know it's alot of money but if it would put your mind at rest it would certainly be a good investment.

my dd has been sleeping on her front from 3 months old. it has never been a problem (although at first i use to regularly check on her) I use to have one of those monitors with a sensor pad called Angelcare. I never used it once, and cost me £60!

Just make sure that she is on a flat surface - no pillows/cot bumpers or anything else that could get in her way (too many toys?) and leave her to it imo. She will put her face to one side I am sure.
Can't believe she is 17 weeks already kbaby.

I am sure that if she can roll it is OK. Being on their tummies isn't the problem, it's being put on their tummies, when they can't choose their sleeping position.

thanks eveyone, i do have a sensor monitor and it does help. im just a new mum panicking about everything.

Dd (nearly 2) has slept on her tummy with her bum waving around in the air since she was about 3 months old .
