Montessori floor bed

Posted this in cots and beds as well:

Does anyone have any experience of using a Montessori style floor bed? DD hates her cot and won’t stay in it during the evening. She ends up co sleeping every night. I don’t mind the co sleeping but would like a couple of hours if possible smile

Just used the pull out lower 'guest' single without putting the legs up for DS from about 14 mo.

Not exactly Montessori but room for him and I. And I occasionally got an hour or so to myself.

Now at 2.4, he's in the normal height single bed, and mostly nowhere the edge

You could just use a single mattress on the floor thats what most Montessori parents do or the Ikea kura with the slats left out is a good solution for a more closed in bed feel

Modestandatinybitsexy · 20/11/2019 16:39

We have the ikea kura and left the slats our, it gives a nice barrier and DS has loved it since he moved in at 2yo. He was pretty good in his cot before though and goes to sleep well now. But he is an early riser so he'll wake up and play and mostly entertain himself for a while in the morning now.

Yep, got a single mattress on the floor for 8 month old, I feed her to sleep on it, then can lay on it as needed in the night to feed

Better not to put mattress directly on floor as it needs airflow or you're risking mould

LucaFritz · 21/11/2019 10:53

Harrysmummy people around the world sleep on floor mattresses just fine Hmm so long as your lifting the mattress and changing the sheets often it'll have airflow

Skyejuly · 21/11/2019 11:01

I just hovered under it daily and change sheets. No mould issues and dd slept better.

Floor beds saved my sanity.

I was still going to bed at the same time as DS when he was 11 months, to make sure he didnt roll out of our bed 🙈

So we switched to the floor bed in his room. I put the video camera on so I could keep an eye or see if he'd rolled on to the floor.

Perfect.

I managed to get my evenings back and spend some time with OH. Wonderful.

We didnt go with slats but I found it a pain to be turning the bed and lifting it up to ensure air flow. I'd go with slats personally.

We did it from around 11m to about a year and a half. I bought a small double mattress and settled him on there and then had my evening to myself then joined him back on the bed when I was ready to go to sleep for the night.
After that I got a nice low bed from Argos to fit the mattress on and he never rolled off so floor bed was short term for us.

Happy to report that DD slept until 3am!!! I had an evening, which is amazing. Only problem was me adjusting to not having her tucked into me to sleep.

We’re selling our house at the moment so I’ll be lifting the mattress for every viewing, so no probs on the mould front. We’re not in the UK or near an ikea at the moment but when we are I’ll be getting a Kura.

Can't agree about the mould - if you're in a flat with concrete floors it'll probably be OK (ours was), but in 2 houses we've had our mattress on the floor (various reasons) - in one, we lifted it one day (and I change sheets weekly - it was just a heavy mattress) and found mould all over the bottom, which had eaten the carpet too! In another house DS1 had been sleeping in just the situation above, on a mattress next to our bed, and he kept waking up wet - we assumed urine, but it wasn't, it was damp from under the floorboards condensing on the mattress and blanket!

So prop it up in the morning if nothing else.

We have used floor beds and found they work great. In terms of the mould - this product is invaluable for any bed on a solid surface, lets the airflow and stops any damp and mould!
