Phenergan for 14 month old

Can someone please help!!

My DS is 14 months old and has never slept through! He goes down for 7-7.30pm every night but after about an hour he starts becoming restless and so begins our night of torture! He throws himself around cries and whimpers. We can sometimes soothe him and get him back to sleep but it won’t be long until he wakes again. We don’t get any time to ourselves in the evening or through the night.

When he got to 12 months and we had tried everything we could do at home and nothing had worked I decided enough was enough, I went to our GP in the hope we could maybe get some help or be referred to a sleep clinic. She straight away said Phenergan would be a solution but because he was under 2 years old she wasn’t legally allowed to prescribe it, so would refer us to a paediatrician to see if we can get some from them to break his terrible sleep pattern. So we waited three months to get to the appointment but the Dr was very reluctant to give phenergan and instead prescribed a sedative called choral hydrate and left us with that. It hasn’t made any difference what’s so ever and now we can’t see the dr again for another few months.

We have now resorted to taking turns sleeping in his room and having no sleep every other night, with one of the nights being spent in our own bed with our 4 year old DD (we only have a two bedroomed house). It’s making us miserable and is taking its toll on our marriage, work life and health as were always run down.

I am actually considering buying Phenergan over the counter and just giving him a small dose I am that desperate! I’ve been told by grandparents and other people that it was used all the time back in the day, so I am thinking is it just the MHRA being over cautious and trying to stop people off giving it to children willy nilly. But I also do know it’s risky.

Is there anything else available over the counter I can try or has anyone given their child under 2 phenergan and if so what dose was it??

Any help or advice is much appreciated!!

What about piriton? That can be taken from 12 months and knocks my sleep refuser out when his eczema flares up.

Phenergan is nasty stuff. DS had it for severe travel sickness when he was 2. Didn't realise it was a sedative and it knocked him out straight away. Wouldn't want to give it to a baby that small. Especially when you don't know the correct dose.

bigflowerdog · 13/11/2019 12:00

I had a terrible sleeper. Ds would wake every couple of hours until he was almost 3.

I still wouldn't have considered giving him medicine to sleep for one second. At 14 months you need to listen to your doctors advice!

Phenergan can cause severe breathing problems or death in very young children. Comes up very quickly when you google it.

SarahTancredi · 13/11/2019 12:01

Have the drs ruled out any medical reason as to why hes not sleeping?

Allergies/intolerences/ reflux etc.

Littlerose85 · 13/11/2019 12:09

We’ve tried piriton to no avail.

We did wonder if he had restless leg syndrome but the GP said he’s too young. He was on cows milk allergy formula but he now has dairy and doesn’t have any other issues apart from eczema on his face for the last three weeks.

How did you go about re introducing milk and have things gotten any better/worse since hes been on it

If hes been on anti milk allergy formula were.did he have soya products?

Selfsettlingat3 · 13/11/2019 12:13

How often is he waking? It’s very unusual for a 14 month old to sleep through.

Mallowmarshmallow · 13/11/2019 12:13

If the Dr is unable to prescribe it then it would suggest it hasn't been suitably tested and licensed for under 2yo. I know that I wouldn't give my child a drug that hasn't been tested appropriately.

I have had poor sleepers and have favoured a more natural approach. Wind down routines, lavender, lots of cuddles, music, books, patience, persistence. They got there in the end, exhausting though it was.

This too shall pass.

Littlerose85 · 13/11/2019 12:21

We did the milk ladder and slowly reintroduced, this has made no difference to his sleeping (or lack of).

He hasn’t slept through since the day he was born and I would have thought that’s more unusual, as by now he should be hitting the point of sleep regression but we’ve never had the sleep progression to begin with! 😂

Littlerose85 · 13/11/2019 12:22

We have also tried the above mentioned, lavender bath, vapour plug, cream. Bath and books at bed time, nothing seems to help 😭

Nearly half of babies with cmpi/cmpa also react to soya so if you were only dairy free and not soya free it could explain why none of it appeared to make a difference

habipprtyh · 13/11/2019 12:24

Please dont drug your child to sleep. It's an awful thing to do.

It's not abnormal for some kids to sleep through the night much later than 14 months.

My first slept through at 8 weeks, second....7 YEARS

Mallowmarshmallow · 13/11/2019 12:25

How many times does he wake. I agree with PP that it's very normal for one year olds to still wake in the night.

What does his sleep pattern look like?

JPharm · 13/11/2019 12:26

You’ll struggle to get a pharmacist to actually sell it anyway. I don’t sell it because it’s only ever used for sedating children, there are better alternatives for allergies.

Surfskatefamily · 13/11/2019 12:28

My 20month old has probably slept through about 3 or 4 times. I feel your pain

I also agree it would be bad to give him phenargan without doctors agreeable and dosing.

Its so so hard but you just need to keep going. Hopefully he'll naturally improve very soon

Celebelly · 13/11/2019 12:29

I think the focus should be more on manageable number of wake-ups rather than 'sleeping through'. I think a lot of kids that age don't do strictly 7-7 and a wake-up or two is pretty normal, so perhaps focus on reducing wake-ups first as a more realistic aim. What happens if you co-sleep with him?

Skiaddicted · 13/11/2019 12:29

My 17m doesnt sleep through, its not that uncommon

Winterdaysarehere · 13/11/2019 12:30

Does he ever have a cough?? A pharmacist gave me drowsy cough meds for ds 10 months and he slept like a log!!
Previously has threatened to park up his pram at the Dr's and go home..... Ask your GP about a sleep programme. Had ds sleeping on the third night after never sleeping alone due to hospital life..

MeadowHay · 13/11/2019 12:31

No I wouldn't do what you are suggesting as it is dangerous. Far more dangerous than your child waking up in the night, which is very normal at this age. Can you please explain exactly when he is waking, how often, what happens when he is awake etc as people may have some advice to help you all? My DD is 17m and still frequently wakes in the night crying. I don't know tons of other similarly aged parents but of the small group I do know, at least 4 others are still regularly waking in the night. And 2 of those have never ever slept through the whole night.

hiredandsqueak · 13/11/2019 12:32

My non sleeping child was prescribed phenergan/vallerghan when he was about three. He only slept two hours in twenty four and had done from birth. It didn't work and what was worse was he did three days of being completely hyperactive (bouncing off the walls) and didn't sleep at all. I certainly wouldn't give it to a child if it hadn't been prescribed. Said child is now an adult and still manages on less than twenty hours sleep a week.

minipie · 13/11/2019 12:34

Just a suggestion but I would try magnesium supplements. Usually better taken as a cream or oil on the skin rather than orally. BetterYou do a good junior one (white and purple bottle) though I don’t know what age it is for. Restless legs type symptoms and sleep problems can be related to low magnesium which lots of us have without knowing. Also dairy is a magnesium source so if he has been dairy free that makes it more likely.

JPharm · 13/11/2019 12:34

winter They shouldn’t have done. All sedating antihistamines apart from chlorphenamine (piriton) were removed from medication for those under 6 some time ago.

I would never sell Phenergan for a child that young nor would I recommend it, babies are much more susceptible to the side effects than adults.

Littlerose85 · 13/11/2019 12:36

@MallowmarshmallowHe wakes every one to two hours and is very unsettled in between.

@habipprtyh it’s not something I’ve thought about lightly and calling it drugging my child makes me sound like I am a bad parent. At the end of the day he is a very bad sleeper and if paediatrician has offered medication then I will try it, as I would if I were a bad sleeper as an adult. It’s been a last resort but still hasn’t worked.

@SarahTancredi do you think I need a referral back to the dietician? They didn’t really seem to help us much or do any test to determine properly what he was allergic to.

Winterdaysarehere · 13/11/2019 12:36

Ds is 18 now.
Been a bed lover a long time now!!

minipie · 13/11/2019 12:37

PS I had a terrible sleeper too - I did try Phenergan, and Piriton, neither did a damn thing. I gather they have made the under 6 formula much less drowsy making in recent years.

Does your DS sleep better if he has had Calpol? If so, that suggests there may be some physical discomfort going on?

SarahTancredi · 13/11/2019 12:41

That depends really.

What exactly is it that the drs and dietitians told you.

You said he has eczema. Are there any other symptoms? Anything even if it seems unrelated.

Any congestion? Coughing? How is his eating ?

Does he have dark circles under his eyes?
