Stopping cuddling toddler to sleep?

DC is currently 20 months. I cuddle him to sleep after his bath, teeth etc. It takes anywhere from 5 mins to 30 mins really as if he's not looking tired at bedtime, I wait until he is.
I don't consider it a rod for my back, as I am away from him during the day and it's 'our time' when he goes to bed. I don't tend to go out in the evening, if I do, it's rare and I put DC to bed first.
I am thinking that I need to wean him off it (Sad) rather than waiting for him to outgrow it as I am expecting DC2. DH works shifts so alternate weeks, I will be on my own for bedtime, so with a toddler (2.5 when baby arrives) and a newborn, I'm thinking our current bedtime is untenable. (DC1 cluster fed like mad in the evening).
I am putting him into a toddler bed for his second birthday and this seems like a good transition to stopping cuddling him to sleep.
Has anyone successfully achieved this and how did you get there?
Alternatively, has anyone made this situation work for them without stopping the cuddling to sleep?

Cuddle him to sleep in your bed and transfer him. You can feed baby and cuddle both children at the same time... it's heaven.

Mine are 4&3 now and don't need cuddling to sleep anymore. They grew out of it in their own time. Although I do sometimes have a quick five minutes in each of their beds at bedtime.

We achieved this by moving into a toddler bed, ditching the grobag and using a duvet and pillow with a favourite toy in the bed. I think she just found it so comfy and cosy compared to just a grobag that she was happy to go straight in.
