5 day old struggled to stay awake all day - not been like this other days

Is this normal? Having to wake for feeds - other days has been glued to my boob until
falls asleep

Is he/she jaundiced? When did you last see your midwife?
It may be something, it may be nothing. If I were you, I'd trust my mother's instinct, that's what it's there for. If you think something's up, get him checked out.
Congrats on your new baby! Oh, and get this thread moved to a busier topic, someone who actually knows something might come along!

rainbowconfetti · 04/11/2019 21:46

My 3rd baby slept constantly for a month!

Check with your midwife though, as it's unusual for your at this stage

mynameisMrG · 04/11/2019 21:50

I agree with pp, get checked for jaundice. My son was like that and his was mild. Had to wake him for feeds. Good to rule it out

moobar · 04/11/2019 21:53

Yes get it checked out op.

Have you checked temperature? Getting plenty wet nappies? DD had jaundice but was and is a non sleeper.

Give ward a ring at five days old they will be happy to offer advice.

She's not yellow - are they always yellow with jaundice?

Look at the white of the eyes to see if slightly yellow - not always obvious on skin tone. If it’s a change better safe than sorry to get checked

imip · 04/11/2019 21:57

My 4 were all like this and jaundiced. Id have to remove their socks and massage their feet to keep them awake, keep them a little cooler to keep them awake to feed.

cordiality · 04/11/2019 21:58

I couldn't tell when my dd was jaundiced, the midwife told me she was yellow, I was just offended that someone had criticised my perfect baby!

PixieDustt · 04/11/2019 22:01

My DS was like this. He had jaundice. Didn't have yellow skin but had slightly yellow in the white of his eyes. He was under monitor for it with the maternity support worker.
Definitely phoned to get checked out as they said to me if it didn't go by a specific time he would need to have more tests done after the heel prick. Thankfully it went by then but they said the most important thing to do is keep fluids down him to help the jaundice out. He was FF and always had to wake him for feeds, he wouldn't wake for them or stay awake during them.

moobar · 04/11/2019 22:05

Same @cordiality . Couldn't see it at all. Strangely I was looking back at photos from last year this week and can see it now, but don't understand how I couldn't then!

nearlyfullycooked · 04/11/2019 22:44

Ff her about 45 mls this morning in a bid to get her to sleep (and me!) could it be she's just fuller today so carching up on sleep? She
was sick and had an explosive poo about 10 this morning. I expressed for 45 mins at one point yesterday and only got 5mls. SadMaybe she's just worn out? HV coming tomorrow. Might try some more formula so at least I'll know she's getting enough liquid. She looks a lovely rosy colour to me. Are there any other signs?

Hi, how are things this morning?
Don't worry about not getting much milk expressing. Lots of people who successfully breastfeed cannot express much. Babies are much more efficient at getting milk than pumps!
If you want to breastfeed, keep going, it's really tough because you don't know how much she's getting, but substituting with lots of formula at this time, when you're trying to get your supply going, is going to make it much tougher for you.
Hopefully she's less lethargic today and attached to your boob, if that's what you want!!

nearlyfullycooked · 05/11/2019 13:42

Hi, thanks, she's been firmly attached, but still not sure she's getting enough. Health visitor came today and said to BF her every two hours, and top up with formula if required, so will try. I had a pretty brutal delivery with an EMCS and have two other DC (3 and 5), so not sure how sustainable this will be for the next few months, despite a v supportive DP. She has a good latch, but I seem to need about six hands to do a BF sometimes!!

The best way to tell if they are getting enough breast milk is by checking you get regular wet nappies.

It's hard to tell how much is going in but you can see what comes out.

cordiality · 05/11/2019 18:52

Sounds like you have this completely under control, you are only six days in, you should be giving yourself a big pat on the back! And you need to change your username!!!Grin
