Is it advisable to give a baby a dummy to settle him and mum go to sleep before he spits it out?

Depends on the baby
Lots of babies settle much better with a dummy, yes.
Some people have a real dislike of dummies.
Lots of people think they are never going to use a dummy, and then they have a baby and realise how helpful they can be.
Some people believe giving a dummy is better than letting them become thumb suckers. Others think they will do what they do, regardless.

Thanks for your help. I think the concern is leaving the baby sucking his dummy while mum falls asleep- is that safe or should he be supervised until he rejects the dummy and it can be removed from his crib?

Oh.
No, it's fine to leave them with a dummy Smile

I had glow in the dark dummies for in the cot at night. So dd could put it back in herself when she was old enough.

Thank you for that useful tip.
