too much sleep?

My DD is 12weeks old and for 3 weeks now has been sleeping through the night from 9-9:30pm until 7 -8am, without waking to be fed. She doesn't have a fixed routine during the day.
I b/f her on waking, she is happy and alert for about 2 hours, then gets grizzly and cries, sometimes needs another feed, other times she will fall asleep until 12 - 1pm

I feed her about 3 times in the afternoon/evening then a bath before her final feed. She tends to get restless and cries a lot from 6pm onwards, and only lots of cuddles and suckling will calm her before she falls asleep.

She is putting on weight steadily, so I think she is feeding enough - although she seems to be feeding for only 10 mins each time - at 2 months she spent 25mins feeding. But I am worried that she should be feeding at least once during the night.

Am I doing things right?

My boys were both like this, particularly DS1 who slept almost all day too, though they were bottlefed. I think your dd is probably fine as long as she continues to gain weight satisfactorily but you will probably find that she starts to wake more in the next few weeks as she becomes ready for weaning. If you are concerned your HV will probably be able to reassure you.

Blimey - you are lucky! If she's putting on weight and is reasonably lively when she IS awake, I'd say enjoy it. But don't go into detail with people whose babies don't sleep. I would probably have killed you! BTW my ds is 11months and STILL gets tired 2hours after waking.

LOL Aloha - good advice though! DebbieL everything seems fine. She's probably got more efficient at feeding over the last month or so, which means she can get the same or more milk in less time. As you say if she's putting on the weight she must be getting the milk. Also from my own experience and from what I've been told evening grumpiness is very common. DH and I despaired of ever eating an evening meal together again - we always had to take it in turns and the other cuddle DS.

Hi DebbieL - I agree with everyone here. I wish my 3 slept like yours does. My first was up every few hours still at that age. My 3rd (age 22 mo) is finally starting to sleep through the night.

DebbieL

She sounds just like my DD.

DebbieL, I bet you are tall and thin too!

Thanks for your replies. I know that I should feel blessed after reading some of the sleep problems here, but I am such a natural worrier, and this is my first baby, that I was so worried she wasn?t feeding enough. Bringing up babies is an art, not an exact science isn?t it?

PamT, I am dreading her starting to wake again, but I guess that is her way of telling me that she is ready for solids.

Aloha, I feel guilty and slightly sheepish, but I will try to enjoy it ? a bit difficult when I still feel chained to the sofa b/f to comfort her in the evenings.

Bozza, I know what you mean ? DH and I also eat as a relay team!

Sis, I should be so lucky!!

DebbieL, my first born behaved like your dd. He turned into a s**t of a toddler and has been a difficult teenager although he is behaving a lot better now that he is focussed on his rock band (15 yrs).
Enjoy your 'good' baby - you'll be tortured somewhere else along the line

aloha · 29/08/2002 23:31

You sound like you are doing a fantastic job. I do remember evenings chained to the sofa b/feeding a crying baby and eating in relays and it wasn't great. However, I bet that will stop in the next three or four weeks as her digestion matures then you will truly have the perfect baby!
