Sleeping through the night

When did people babies start sleeping through the night?
My baby boy is 9 weeks old and I know he's probably a long way off!
I was just wondering if it just happens or you have to change their routine?

About 12/13 months with my first to do 7-7 reliably with no wake ups. Only three weeks into number 2 and hoping we can achieve it by 7/8 months this time.

Mintypea5 · 16/10/2019 14:30

Age 5 Sad

DS2 has done from about 9 months but teething, illness and sleep regressions mean sometimes it's back to multiple night wakes

moonlight1705 · 16/10/2019 14:30

Mine was roughly 5 months when it happened regularly although she did do it a few times before that which scared me at first.

When she moved to her own big cot (as opposed to the next to me cribs) then she really started sleeping well. Although I will say, my sleeping through version is that now at 8 months old, she wakes up in the night and goes back to sleep when I pop in and put my hand on her - we are still disturbed but not for longer than 5 minutes.

Occasionally from just before 2 years but it's not guaranteed at all and thanks to a run of colds, hasn't happened for several weeks.
Didn't happen til after I night weaned him but I waited until we could do it gently and I wasn't ever going to sleep train so was all when he was ready and able

GleamInYourEyes · 16/10/2019 19:55

On and off from 9 months and reliably from 2-2.5.

Ohhgreat · 16/10/2019 20:00

Haha 18 months and counting....

Hayley2407 · 16/10/2019 20:54

Haha! I've got a long way to go 😂
I can't complain really as his last feed is at 10:30 and he sleeps till 4ish then again till 8.
It's me that doesn't sleep cos I'm awake with his every sound!

Both DD and DS from 12 weeks or so. 😶 That was from about midnight-1 am to 7 or so. Though I never did nappy changes during the night (you can no problem with cloth), so it was always just: baby cries, get bottle, drink bottle, wind and back to sleep (I FF). I think not waking them up too much is a good thing.

SoyDora · 16/10/2019 21:07

3.5 years for DD1
15 months for DD2
DS is 9 months and so far showing no signs of wanting to sleep through the night.

18 months for both

maxiflump1 · 16/10/2019 21:13

Both DS' slept through 7-6am by 6 months bar the occasional bad night die to teeth/illness etc. I really think it's just pot luck!

RushianDisney · 16/10/2019 21:13

DD only started sleeping through a few weeks after I stopped breastfeeding her at two years old. But since then she has been fantastic, a year on from the chronic sleep deprivation I'm starting to feel human again!

Winter2019 · 16/10/2019 21:14

@Waterloosunsets I feel ya.. My dd is nearly 3.5 and is still waking up once at night to have some milk. Baby no. 2 due in 3 months. I'm so worried about getting some sleep!

polkadotpixie · 16/10/2019 21:45

About 10/11 weeks. My sweet snoozy boy! I am very grateful

Hayley2407 · 17/10/2019 04:28

@polkadotpixie I hope I'm this lucky! Definitely is just pot luck isn't it. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

He’s done it twice already and he’s only 8 weeks. Currently I’m awake as my boobs are so bloody uncomfortable and he’s still asleep and it’s 5am.....

NameChangedNoImagination · 17/10/2019 04:54

Did from about 3 months, 10 hours a night. Then when started to get teeth it all went to hell. Refused the crib. Waking multiple times a night. Still ongoing at 1 year old... sigh...

Hayley2407 · 17/10/2019 04:55

@Karigan195 anything in particular you do with your routine to help him sleep longer? His last feed is 10:30pm but can't seem to get him past 04:30, he's slept till 5 once but that was a fluke haha!

OP posts:
Karigan195 · 17/10/2019 04:59

We have play time in the evening and I don’t let him nap past 6 until it’s bed time. I don’t know if that helps. He’s also in a cloth nappy with fleece liners so super comfy (tots bots bamboozle) and feed at every opportunity in the day to make sure he’s not hungry. I think these things help but may just be lucky

Karigan195 · 17/10/2019 04:59

He’s still asleep....I may need to go express!

kikibo · 17/10/2019 08:39

@Hayley2407

That's pretty good though. 6 hours is termed 'sleeping through' at that age.

Aside from no nappy changes and as little light/disruption as possible (including conversation), I felt I did the right thing by giving a top-up feed before bed, whether they'd had a feed half an hour ago or not (obviously until they were full, no force-feeding). Though that may be wishful thinking, as my midwife seemed to think when I told her about my 'strategy'.

I do feel though that once they reach the 6-hour mark, they start extending quickly. We'll see whether it's all true with number 3 as well who will be here in January.

SoyDora · 17/10/2019 08:46

10.30-4.30 is exceptionally good for that age. They still need the feeds. I wouldn’t really be encouraging a baby that age to sleep longer... if they do it naturally then great, if they’re waking it’s because they’re hungry.

BeanBag7 · 17/10/2019 09:05

About 18 months and it happened shortly after I stopped night feeds. Obviously you can't drop night feeds for a 9 week old!
To be honest I would just go with it for now. Some babies sleep through at that age but the majority don't, and won't for many months.

MustardScreams · 17/10/2019 09:08

The thing is with baby sleep it’s not linear. So they may start sleeping through, and then start teething, learning to crawl/walk/talk, have a regression and you’re back to 5 wake ups a night.

Dd reliably slept through from about 2 onwards. She a fab sleeper now, into bed with a book and I won’t hear a peep until 6/7. But the first 2 years were a bloody struggle.
