Is this normal for 9 week old?

Hi all DD is 9 weeks, breastfed with one bottle of expressed milk per day. Still feeds very regularly, every two hours from start to start of feeds, sometimes a little longer but rarely 3 hours which apparently it should be by this age, and more frequently in evenings.

She's a very poor napper, no schedule, rarely naps for longer than half an hour. Sometimes she will have a couple of decent naps but timings hugely vary and it doesn't seem to relate to when she woke up in the morning or other factors that I can see. Nighttime sleep not too bad, never woken more than 3 times, usually once or twice. Starts day any time between 6:30-8:30. It takes her ages to settle in the evenings, can be anywhere between 8:30-10:30 pm although I always start getting her ready for bed around 7. She will feed for about 1.5 hours total before finally falling asleep.

Does all this sound normal for her age? Am I worrying too much about naps and that she still seems to feed so often? I know they generally won't have a proper routine by this age but thought by now there would be more gaps between feeds and at least some structure to naps, and earlier bedtime. If this is normal and I just need to wait it out then fine but want to know if there is anything different I should be doing!

Ahh, try not to worry. She’s weeny! She probably doesn’t even know she has hands right now, just feed and let her sleep when she wants. You’ll find a pattern but this is early early days.

If she’s alert, gaining weight and having wet and dirty nappies then she’s doing well. Check in with HV and doctors if you have concerns about her health, but otherwise just enjoy your baby and rest when you can x

Totally normal. Don’t believe anyone who says they should go a certain length of time between feeds or should sleep for a certain length of time. It’s all total bullshit. Those figures are, at best, based on formula feeding, at worst just totally made up.

Your baby sounds perfectly normal. Mine fed every two hours until they were several months old. The feeds gradually get quicker and more spaced out but absolutely not by 9 weeks old. Your baby is still in the 4th trimester and just needs close contact with you.

You're still in the 4th trimester, anything goes.

And to be honest, i was still BF every 2 hours, day and night til probably after 12 months when he actually started eating

Thanks everybody, very reassuring 🙂 I was just having a bad morning and one of those complete 'I don't know what the f**k I'm doing' moments.

She's gaining weight, very alert, all HCPs comment on how alert for her age. Generally a happy little thing, very smiley 😊 so I will try not to stress too much!

Got first vaccines this afternoon so have the Calpol ready!

I don't think many of us know what the fuck we're doing! At least I don't.

DD, 23 weeks, still feeds every 2 hours or sometimes more often. Her bedtime feed is an epic akin to War and Peace. Still naps like a chaos demon. Nine weeks is tiny! Sleepy sausage territory.

Good luck with the vaccinations! Watch out for the epic rotavirus-vaccine-induced poo afterwards, it's a double-bagger.

PopcornAndWine · 01/10/2019 12:12

@burritofan wow her poos can already be pretty epic! Not looking forward to that!

She just fell asleep faceplanted on my boob and I really need the loo but so reluctant to disturb her... ah motherhood!

My DS is 10 wks and EBF. He too feeds every 2hrs during the day. Nighttime is anytime between every 2-4hrs.

If we’re out and about he naps well for long periods, if at home his naps are short. No timings or anything and I don’t try and do a routine with naps, he just does so when he likes.

As others have said, they’re still tiny and too young to worry about timings/feeds/naps
