Baby always wakes up crying :(

Hi all my 4 month old is not the best sleeper but I’ve came to terms with that for now.

What makes me sad is that for as long as I can remember, the majority of the time he wakes (whether it be from a nap or night time sleep), he wakes up crying.

Now I understand there will be times he is hungry/uncomfortable/still tired etc but that’s not always the case (afaik) and surely there should be times he wakes up without crying ?

The odd time after a nap in his buggy he will just wake up quietly but for the most part, he cries when he wakes.

Has anyone ever experienced this or can shed any light on this?

I’m hoping he grows out of it soon !

ds1 woke up from every nap screaming. No idea why. He certainly doesnt do it now hes a teenager, but he did as a baby/toddler.
Maybe he would rather still be asleep, or hes unsettled and doesnt know where he is or where you are?

This is completely normal!! Nearly every baby I have ever known wakes crying - that's how they make sure someone is coming to care for them.

Please don't worry

My 4mo old sometimes does, I offer boob immediately and try and rock him back to sleep.

Sometimes though he sounds upset as if emerging from a nightmare, then I just cuddle him and help him awake fully and calm down.

A lot of the times he’s been in my arms or next to me so god knows.

And a lot of the times it’s after a long nap or when he gets up for the day so don’t think it’s akways that Appreciate it could be sometimes.

Don’t get me wrong when he comes to, he starts smiling but it breaks my heart and I long to hear him wake up and just babble to himself Sad

Thanks for your reply branleuse. At what age roughly did it stop?

Sorry just seen other replies!

Thank you both , i just thought it was unusual for babies to do this but I’m glad it’s normal.

I told a friend who has kids and she seemed surprised so I felt bad as though it was my doing !

It scared me too the first few times, it’s not nice but a cuddle and gently helping him to fully awake state works for us, he starts smiling soon enough Smile

My DD was the same...probably the vast majority of the time til she was about...10 months? Then she gradually started napping and sleeping more soundly and gradually did it less. She's 15 mo now and she still does it sometimes but less often than not. We never knew what was wrong. She goes through phases where she does it a lot in the night briefly too, I always wonder if she has nightmares.

I think the majority of babies wake up this way

Jent13c · 25/09/2019 19:54

Mine was the same until I coslept with him. Not what I'd recommend for everyone but he just needed the comfort and it worked for us. Certainly never woke up in his little bassinet cooing and giggling away. To be honest even now if he wakes up on his own at 2.5 years he is a bit put out!

My girl twin still frequently wakes up crying at 13 months. I’m fairly sure it’s normal? We co sleep so she sees me as soon as she wakes but she still often cries. I’ve always just assumed it’s the shock/surprise of going from asleep to awake?

Celebelly · 26/09/2019 00:23

Yep, very rarely she will wake up and babble but most of the time she'll be starting to cry before she's even opened her eyes 🙄 She's perfectly happy once you go and retrieve her so it's just her way of saying HELLO I AM AWAKE NOW I think

Thanks all that’s made me feel a lot better!

FTM so I question everything Blush
