Help mummy I'm stuck

I have just returned from a weeks break at my parents with my 8 month old DD. She slept beautifully in their travel cot. She is very fidgety at the moment - constantly rolls around knocking her dummy out of the cot and getting her arms and legs stuck through the bars. The travel cot with its flexible sides obviously allowed her to move about without hurting herself or waking herself up. First night back in her cot at home and she is back to normal, banging around, arms and legs akimbo, waking up every 5 minutes to be rescued.

Common sense says use the travel cot for a few months but we live on the 3rd floor and the neighbours bang on the ceiling for every step we take so I don't think they would appreciate DDs constant leg banging at all hours.

I don't like the idea of a cot bumper - do they work??

Am stuck as to know what to do. Please help sleep Gurus.

Cot bumpers work for DD - having said she now does crawling circuits round the cot and finds the one bit that doesn't have a bumper on to bash her head against, but generally yes, it's worth a shot!

I don't mean to sound negative here, but I thought cot bumpers were a cot death risk and dangerous as they can use them to step on thus giving them a bit of height to get out of cot?

If she sleeps better in the travel cot, wouldn't it make sense to use that for the time being, until the fidgeting has calmed down a little?

moljam · 11/08/2007 21:21

my ds did this.we coslept which was fine but he disturbed me by fidgeting so much!then he went in travel cot which was fine but there not made for long term use.then we got bigger cot.very cheap from ebay now if he wants to sleep like star its fine|!

Yes, they are implicated in overheating, but they are very thin - the same thickness as a duvet or blanket and they are soft so you can't use them to climb on.

I worried for weeks about this, then discovered that the risk of SIDS plummets once babies can roll over independently.

I don't see any problem with using the travel cot.

why would the neighbours be bothered, why would it make more noise

CrookshanksinJimmyChoos · 11/08/2007 21:26

Am at your neighbours moaning though! Twunts!

MerlinsBeard · 11/08/2007 21:28

how noisy could a fidgety baby be?

Tap2 · 11/08/2007 21:36

Take my word for it Trinity - the ceiling light was shaking in my parents lounge as DD had a little kick around upstairs in the travel cot. We tried wrapping blankets and all sorts around the base to muffle the vibration but it didn't work!

Think I might try a bigger cot - or bubble wrap

we used our travel cot for about a month when my ds was fidgety and had learnt to flip over but couldnt flip himself back ... it was really useful and stopped him waking himself up as he hit the bars with flailing limbs!

magnolia1 · 11/08/2007 21:44

We have been using the travel cot for 3 nights now. He was waking every hour and the past 3 nights in been just twice a night.
I think it's the space.
How bad is it to use a travelcot everynight and whats long term use?

Nat1H · 11/08/2007 21:47

I used a cot bumper as well. The most fantastic thing! Don't really see why they are considered such a hazard as long as they are tied on securely. Definately help to stop legs and feet getting stuck.

bodiddly · 11/08/2007 22:31

I used a cot bumper in his cot ... and then put him in the travel cot when he was getting stuck ... and I think the travel cot was fine - we only used it for a month or two until he learnt how to control his limbs a little better.
