16 month old climbing out of cot in the dark

Hi there

I'm hoping you someone can shed some light here.

Our 16 month old has been climbing out his cot for the past few nights and crying at the door, he's already fast asleep when we put him in his cot but he will wake in the early hours and climb out. The cot is on the lowest setting so it is already high to climbs currently we have duvets and mattress on floor to cushion if he falls. This morning I went into his room and he was fast asleep on a chair in his room so he had done it again but ended up asleep there!

Any advice on what the best thing for me to do? He has ended up in our bed twice and goes straight to sleep only because he was crying so much and we had work we bought him to our bed.

Please help! lol!!

You need to move to a toddler bed or a cot without sides. It can be dangerous if he climbs out, he could land awkwardly and potential break a bone. He might stay in once he has a "big boy bed"

Thank you! I guess I just thought he was too young haha this is being done right now so fingers crossed this works and he stays in his bed ;)

I know it feels scary when they are young but hes climbing out of it anyway so it doesn't really have a benefit! If you find he still won't stay in you could put a stair gate on his bedroom door and make his room safe and peaceful (i.e no toys!) then if he gets up hopefully he will be bored and just get back into bed

We moved ds to a toddler bed when he was 16 months because he rejected his cot. It was absolutely fine, we just put a baby gate over his doorway and kept his door open at night so he didn't feel trapped in.

We didn't have much of a choice, because ds was clear that he was never sleeping in his cot again, but I wonder if it was actually easier at that age than waiting until 2 or 2 and half when they have more of an opinion about things.

We converted the cot bed into the toddler bed, with a bed rail, when DS started tipping himself over the side rail in the night.

Yes agreed with the toddler bed. My DD had several cot breaks. The first time she escaped she wondered under my bed, rustling stuff there. I actually thought I had a ghost for 15secs 🙄

My middle DC could shin out of the cot by that age so we popped him in a bed

Time for a bed Smile

Thanks everyone ! I feel better now! at least it seems a safer option, the bed is very low too so just popped another small cot mattress on floor too incase he rolls over

mine did this. we put him in a single bed with a soft landing if he fell out. The baby gate was moved to his bedroom door.
