This is a stupid question.. cot bed help.

We've got the cot bed.. we've got the mattress.. I suddenly though. I've never seen a cot with a duvet? Or a pillow?

But you can buy cot bed duvet and pillow sets.

Do newborns need duvets in the cot? Or just sleepbags/blankets? I know they shouldn't have a pillow tbh. Also I realise people worrying that babys can kick blankets off or over themselves and incress risk of sids/ suffocation.

So what is recommended? So I need to but a duvet and pillow set? How do I actually dress a cot bed easy for when baby is here? It's the one thing I'm really struggling to get my head around.

No pillow or duvet until over 1 year old. Both mine slept in Moses blankets for the first 6 months next to my bed with a sheet and cellular blanket to start, then a baby sleeping bag after. Baby sleeping bags moved to the cotbed with them.

dementedpixie · 09/09/2019 21:41

Duvet and pillows arent suitable until age 1. Sheets/Blankets or baby sleeping bag are options

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 09/09/2019 21:43

What age did you introduce a sleeping bag rather than cellular blankets?

Noted: No duvet or pillow until over 1 years old. Thank you Smile

When your baby is in it, you don't need anything other than a sleeping bag. A duvet would be dangerous. Cot bed sets are only needed much later when your toddler is using it as a bed. We didn't use a duvet until after 2, although you can use them a bit younger I think.

BendingSpoons · 09/09/2019 21:46

Sleeping bags have a minimum weight on them, usually around 8lb. It's also about making sure their head can't slip down through the gap.

dementedpixie · 09/09/2019 21:47

Sleeping bags have a minimum weight so it depends on how heavy they are as to when they can go in it

pastabest · 09/09/2019 21:47

The point of a cot bed is supposed to be that it converts into a toddler bed that's why you can get appropriately sized duvet and pillow sets for when they are a bit older.

Moses basket first with cellular blanket then move when ready, for us it was 2 months. When moved we used sleep sacks, mucj easier as blankets get kicked off as they get bigger. Used duvet and pillow when we changed cot into cotbed at 18 months

Hi
My daughter went from moses basket to cot bed the height of the matteress is adjustable to go down as they grow until they are ready for it to be a bed.

Have a look at the lullaby trust recommendations :
No bumpers on cot beds
Duvets and pillows shouldn't be used until the child is at least 12 months old.

I had my daughter in a grobag or alternative until she started trying to stand you can alter the tog and add blankets on top. She was (and still is) a blanket kicker so would wake up cold so a grobag was fantastic.

My daughter who is now 2 has a cot size duvet and pillow they can be purchased from asda, ebay, amazon etc

I hope this helps
X

Sleeping bags are brilliant. Think we used the cellular blankets for the first week or two (when she was having a dirty nappy with every feed, so the sleeping bags were a pain) then switched. Still in them at 17 months. That and a fitted sheet for the mattress are all you need. Oh, and the baby should be in the same room as you for the first six months (just in case you don't know that and need to know what room to build the cot in).

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 09/09/2019 21:50

@pastabest that didnt even cross my mind. Feel abit silly now that makes perfect sense!

Right so all I really need at the moment is fitted sheets, cellular blankets and appropriate weight sleep bags for when they're big/heavy enough for them.

I'm glad I asked Blush

We had a crib rather than moses basket and then into the cot

minipie · 09/09/2019 21:52

I put mine in sleeping bags as soon as they were big enough not to slip down inside them - sorry not sure when that was but I think some come with a minimum weight recommendation?

Before that as newborns, DD2 had a zip up swaddle thing, DD1 had nothing except babygro as she would only sleep on me for for ages Hmm

I think I did briefly have DD1 with a blanket - the key thing is the blanket should be at the foot of the bed, folded/tucked in to make it shorter than the baby, and then the baby’s feet should be at the end of the bed (“feet to foot”. So they can’t wriggle further down the bed and end up with their face under the blanket. Sleeping bags are much simpler!

We have got a next to me crib, so baby will be in with us. I initally thought just a few months but just seen PP say recommended in our room for first 6 months so will look into that more too.

Google the safe sleep guidelines OP - the lullaby trust are a charity that specialise in this.

Harrysmummy246 · 10/09/2019 12:25

2.2yo DS loves his toddler pillow but only just convincing him that a cellular blanket over him is worth while. Last time we tried the duvet, he rolled out of the bed getting out from under it!

Flightlessbird17 · 10/09/2019 17:11

My boy has been in a cot bed since day 1 with sleep bags up until he was nearly 2, I love love love sleep bags. Then we took one side off the cot and he did so well we then got a cot duvet and pillow a few days later and he loved it.

MummaJ1 · 11/09/2019 07:27

You can buy newborn sleeping bags! 😁 They're called grosnugs from the gro company. They are Fab for peace of mind.
Come in different togs, thermometer and what to wear guide. They also have popper arms, so you can swaddle them in them or have arms free. For a panicky first time mum, these really helped put my mind at ease! x

LuckyKitty13 · 11/09/2019 07:38

Look at the safe sleep guidance. In your room until at least 6m.
Have you not had info from your midwife? We had loads of leaflets

MummyofTw0 · 11/09/2019 07:44

Not a stupid question at all,
We all are just learning as we go

We didn't use a duvet until the cot side came down. Approx 2 years for us

Moses basket and cellular blanket tucked in at first then cot and a sleeping bag

Or if it's warm no blanket or sleeping bag

drspouse · 11/09/2019 08:21

You don't need any blankets.
We used all those cute blankets you get given, in the car, instead of a coat.

ColaFreezePop · 11/09/2019 10:41

Gro bag/sleep bag size is head size and body length dependant.

The right size is one your baby's head can't slip down in and their legs don't reach down to the bottom.

You can actually get newborn gro bags but if you are still changing nappies at night they are a pitta.

Also why the minimum time is 6 months in your room it may be easier to keep them in longer as then you don't have far to go at night when they scream.
