daytime naps pattern - be grateful for any advice

Hi,
DS 5.5 months, tends to have a nap 9-10 and 12-2, at least he does say 5 days out of 7, and start and end time can vary by half an hour each way, depending on when he starts getting sleepy. However, on the odd day (like today! when he is now attacking his baby gym mirror) it all goes to pot, for no reason whatsoever that I can see. He had his morning nap, we went out for a walk, got back before 11.55, he'd just fallen asleep in the pram, woke up when we got home and no sign of sleep since.

on days like this, I tend to just let him do his own thing, and watch out for tired signs to reappear. However, not sure if this is the best thing or not - ie, as I said he's now playing on his baby gym. anybody else have anything similar and what do you do about it? - I'm trying hard to stick to the same sort of pattern for the day as he still wakes a few times at night (as my other posts will testify!) and I think it probably helps his body clock. Am I stimulating him too much letting him play on, should I keep him in the bedroom with the blind down? any thoughts most grateful
TIA

I think if he's happy then just go with it. My DD had absolutely no sense of routine and only slept for 30 minute burst until about 7 or 8 months. If you manage to stick to your routine and it suits most days that sounds ideal. There's nothing worse than trying to get a baby to sleep that doesn't want to sleep. It's soul destroying I should know I did it for months. If he was getting too stimulated he'd let you know by being really crabby so if he's happy just let him get on with it and enjoy him.

These babies do like to keep us on our toes. He's just reminding you who is boss.
