Coughing!!

My LG (4) currently has an awful cough which gets worse at night.
I have tried evvvverything to try and get a peaceful night for us both.
Last night, she was in my bed, water at the ready, honey and a teaspoon ready, little bit of cough medicine ready and lots of pillows to keep her elevated.
Tonight, we have vapour rub on feet, chest and back, children's olbas oil, a plug in vapour thing, and she's currently asleep on me, upright with two pillows and myself keeping her upright.
No sleep for me tonight, although it's helped her slightly- fingers crossed!

Any tips or tricks that I've missed?
She's coughing so hard that she's made herself sick a few times, which then brings on more tears and more coughing. Anything would be great Grin

Sorry I don’t have anything to suggest other than have you seen your GP to check she isn’t asthmatic? I am and when I have a cough it is so strong that I can retch too.

The only thing that can address this is steroids, so might be worth checking out?

@TreadLightly3 yes I have been wondering if she's asthmatic, a trip to the gp was my next idea. Thank you x

Good luck! Xx

get GP to consider whooping cough too, even if she has been vaccinated.

We don't normally diagnose asthma under 5 years of age. If inhaled steroids are given, she will need to be trialled off them if they work to check for rebound symptoms. That and a good history suggestive of asthma would be the only way I would consider a diagnosis at her age

Thank you- we have a gp appointment this morning so we'll see how it goes x

OP I highly recommend a humidifier if you're in a position to buy one. They range in price from £20-£70. I went for a mid-range one from Argos. It never fails to work when my DC has a nighttime cough.

I put it on high and close the bedroom door for about 30 minutes before bedtime then turn it on low. For the first night I'd keep it on low all night. Other nights I've turned it off when I've gone to bed and kept DC bedroom door closed over.
Good luck, nighttime coughs are the worst.

@MemorylikeDory thank you very much. I will have a look into one!

The GP prescribed an antihistamine for her to have twice a day, and we'll see how that goes.

Thank you everyone xx
