Newborn keeps rolling over

Our DS is 12 days old and although he can't hold his head up by himself, he can turn it when he's laid down. When it's nap time, we always lay him on his back, but within seconds he turns his head sideways, then it's just a matter of minutes before he's a) rolled over and b) if he's on the sofa during the day, he wiggles sideways until he's literally nestled into mine or DH's legs.

We read all the stuff about SIDS and I'm worried he's not in a good position for sleeping, but when I move him back to where he's supposed to be, he wakes up and fusses then rolls back onto his side again. Has anyone else had this problem? Do we need to do anything? Is there even anything we can do? He seems to be breathing ok and he seems comfortable.

I think you need to make sure he’s in a safe sleep environment so no sofas or random places. Get a moses basket - if he can’t hold his neck up a fall could be devastating.

My ds always used to roll onto his side and only really started sleeping when I put him down on his front (not advising this, make your own decisions) I was 3 months into not more than 30 mins consecutive sleep so took advice from gp and hv. I made sure he had a safe sleep space. He had a Moses basket with a new, firm mattress with a tight sheet and no blanket or toys. He also took a dumny which helped as he couldn't turn face down without knocking his dummy out which (without fail) woke him up.

Both mine side slept due to reflux.

I'd adopt the side sleep for him, it will be safer if you're laying him in that position.

And I'd position his arm under his head.,like the recovery position to prevent rolling.

@RubbingHimSweetly yes he doesn't sleep for long either -- he's BF and cluster feeding atm so we get about 30-40 mins of him sleeping at a time. The HV and midwife both suggested we put him on the sofa (which we've made safe) during the day instead of his carrycot as he's not sleeping long, and I'm recovering from a CS and still having trouble bending/lifting/walking around with him and he's feeding so often. IDK if I'm just worrying too much about the rolling over.

@RubbingHimSourly thanks putting his arm under his head is a great idea, I'll try that.
