How to stop feeding to sleep for 6mo

Hi all, does anyone have any suggestions for gently breaking an EBF baby of the habit of feeding to sleep?

LO is 6 months old, and generally sleeping well - usually asleep between 7.15pm and 8pm depending on naps in the day, then sleeping for about 11-12 hours with one feed around 4am or 5am. He's a bit of a fussy napper but I normally manage to get 2 hours of daytime naps from him.

We have a short but sweet bedtime routine - sometimes bath, music, pyjamas, sleeping bag, bedtime story, and then I feed him to sleep. It's worked well up to now, but I would like to get him to fall asleep on his own for a couple of reasons

  1. It would be great for his dad to be able to do bedtime, as he might be looking after baby on his own at times when I go back to work in a few months
  2. Baby has started waking up 40 minutes after being put to bed, and takes at least 15 minutes to resettle, sometimes needing another feed. I think this is probably due to feeding to sleep and not being able to self settle without the boob.

I would prefer not to do CIO methods as his sleep is generally good and I don't want to start distressing him at bedtime. I don't mind if it takes a while for new habits to take.

Anyone had any success gently breaking the breastfeeding to sleep habit?

Check out Lucy Wolfe's Stay and Support method.

Tbh tho, my 6mo DD hasn't been fed to sleep for about two months and still often has a 45-min wakeup after being put down. I think it's more to do with not linking her sleep cycles. After that she sleeps fine so I just accept I might spend 10 mins or so soothing her back to sleep.
