End of the daytime nap???

In the last few days my dd (2.7) has started to take longer to drop off in the evenings and is waking earlier. She used to go from 6.45pm - 7.15am no problem, but for the last few days she has been singing away in cot til after 7.15pm and awake at 6am. Is this her way of showing she no longer needs a sleep in the day and because she's getting a sleep is cutting down at nighttime??

how does she sleep during her nap?

Could well be. DD1 dropped her daytime nap around this age. Was a bit of a mare for a few weeks coping with her being really tired late afternoon, but it soon sorted itself out, and she went back to sleeping really well at night again.

i have been having the same problems with ds hes 21 months and was taking forever to get to sleep in the evenings.......stopped his afternoon nap last weekend and hes been going to bed at 7.15 pm and hes asleep for 7.20. he wakes up around 7.30 am.

She sleeps well after lunch but on the odd occasion she has missed it has coped. I am keen that she doesn't take away from nighttime with sleeping in the day.

Why not see how she goes if she has managed without a nap? It might be that she'll just need one every other day or so at first. Mind you, it took me some adjusting when DD gave up her nap!

Thanks everyone. That's what I thought, just wanted a bit of reassurance.

doesnt really bother me that ds doesnt have a nap anymore..........he's just nosey and loves to be running around all day (always has to be naked when indoors as well)and hes out like a light in the evening

witchandchips · 03/08/2007 11:40

slight voice of dissent here. If she is still going to sleep well after lunch then looks as though she still needs this rest. She may not then settle at night cos she is over tired. Can you try making the nap shorter and putting her to bed slightly later in the evenings?

My ds dropped his nap at the same age but we knew this was the right time because he both refused to sleep after lunch AND when he did sleep during the day slept for less at night. Not sure that this is the case for you

dd2 has just stopped her afternoon naps - she's 2 and a half. she's v v ready for bed by 7 or 8pm

Oblomov · 03/08/2007 12:06

DS is 3.5 and still afternoon naps are still going strong - huuuurah. But for the last few weeks, not necessarily every day. This is fine. I just let him do what he wants. He is still going to bed at about 7.30, so no problem.

I agree with witchandchips. If she still goes for a nap easily - she may well need it. My ds just lay in his cot singing for 2 hours at a time and I reckoned he didn't need a nap anymore. But he then started dropping off at 4pm on the couch which was a pita.

I'd keep her nap to an hour and just put her to bed a little later - no harm in her singing in her cot till sleep.
