Is it time to shorten/cut out my 2 year olds nap?

My son was always an awful sleeper, then we settled into something bearable.

For the last 2 months or so he's been waking between 5-5:30 every morning. He used to go to sleep by 7:30 but now it's about 8-8:15 (which usually involves him pratting about in his cot for at least 30 minutes).

He has a max 2 hour nap in the day - normally around 12-2 when at home or 1-3 when at nursery. Nursery say that he would sleep longer if they let him.

My question is; does he need to reduce or drop his nap so he's more tired by the time he goes to bed?

Is it worth coping with a mardy toddler at the end of the day to hope for a lie-in (6:30 isn't asking much is it?!)

Thanks for any pearls of wisdom

Yes I would try cutting it. You may have to cut it right down. I think my 2.5yo is basicslly ready to drop his altogether now as it's affecting bedtime too much, but I'm not ready!!!!

Hiya. Thanks for the reply. It’s a toss up isn’t it; what’s more important- a break in the day to get everything done or a smoother bedtime and hopefully longer in bed. I think we’re going to try and cut it to one hour from tomorrow and go from there.

I think cutting it to one hour is a good idea. I have a 4yo and remember cutting naps quite tricky as he still needed a nap of some kind at 2 but not the big 2 hour one.

Thanks mama bear. My dh is off for three days now so we’re going to do just that and see how we get on.

Just wanted to update this for others in a similar position. Over the last week we have cut DS nap down to around 1-1hr 30 max and it seems to be having a positive influence on his morning wakeup time. 🤞🏻 it continues
