My 5 month old will only nap in her harness whilst walking or whilst nursing. She will never ever nap in her cot . She also takes all evening to settle to sleep but when eventually asleep she does go for long stretches at night.

I am happy with our routines - I have read so Much advice on this topic- and am content in knowing that I cannot possibly do any more to support her to nap and settle for bedtime- I believe this is just her personality and she will grow out of it (apparently both myself and my husband struggled with sleep as babies too!) sometimes nursing works, sometimes rocking works, some times singing works and she settles herself . She changes her mind each night which one will settle her ! (I'm currently sat here watching her try to settle herself after about half hour of her chatting away to herself because nursing and rocking wasn't doing it for her tonight lol!)

My reason for posting and question to others in similar situations is , how long does this last for ? I am craving some time in the day to catch up with chores and have a little tiny bit of me time but I can't ever see a time where my daughter will be happy to nap in her cot for just 20 mins let alone a couple of hours !! Please tell me I won't be out walking with a 2 or 3 year old to get them to sleep!!? Do people do that!? When can I ever get anything done !! - this is my first born, so as you can tell I'm very new to this and haven't got a clue what is in store next month let alone a couple of years!!!

Encouraging words would be much appreciated x

Both of mine did this. DD1 was strongly encouraged to nap and sleep on her own at 6 months. I went all soft with DD2 and only got her into her own cot at 9 months.

I suspect that this is one of those things where everyone does it their own way and there is no right or wrong.

Both children are still happy to nap on me whenever they can. This can be useful at times!
