Muslin as a comforter - safe?

My DS is 4 months and used to occasionally take a dummy but now refuses one. We have recently realised that he is comforted by nuzzling into a muslin and suckling on it and this eventually sends him to sleep, but he does pull it over his face a bit. He has napped with one but only when I’m watching over him, I take it away once he’s asleep if I have to leave the room. He has started waking more in the night (4 month sleep regression I assume) - do you think it would be safe to leave a muslin in his crib attached to our bed? He’s next to me but obviously I will fall asleep and may not notice if he pulls it to his face, but the material is breathable? I really want a better nights sleep but wouldn’t take any risks if there was one. What would you do?

I couldn't, are they long enough to be a neck issue.

ReganSomerset · 14/07/2019 20:57

I wouldn't, no. Odds are it'd be fine though.

magpie24 · 14/07/2019 20:57

I wouldn't as my 7.5 month old has only just figured how to pull something off her face when she doesn't like it

Thanks all. I’m just going to use it for supervised naps and falling asleep at night then removing it from the crib. This seemed to work last night.

What about cutting it so it’s a smaller square?

sirmione16 · 15/07/2019 08:23

I used to tie the Muslim to the crib bar so he could only pull it so far, it wasn't long enough to reach over his face if that makes sense? This was before he could roll though, now he can I don't let him have it. I'll wait until he can remove things from his face

aewwwenxt · 15/07/2019 08:28

Is it big enough to tuck in like a sheet? He could lie on it and still have the smell/feel but can't pull it about

gollygoodnessgraciousme · 15/07/2019 08:35

I put a muslin under my little one's head to save the sheet from spit up or anything. Would that maybe work? You could scrunch it up a bit at the side so baby could still have it near it's face but wouldn't be able to completely cover.

My now 5 year old has been very attached to her muslin since she was weeks old. I used a huge one as a sheet when it became obvious it comforted her but she liked(s!) to hold it so I ended up cutting one up into small safer squares, big enough to grab a handful but that was all. She had 3 full-sized ones in bed last night ...... 🤷🏻‍♀️

RogueV · 15/07/2019 08:40

Was thinking the same for my 5 month old she also like sucking and chewing on a muslin however I’ve decided she’s too young for me to just leave it in her cot

timeforawine · 15/07/2019 08:42

I bought small muslin squares from ebay as she loved snuggling the large ones which i felt were unsafe when unsupervised. The little ones work great, now have about 16 as she kept losing them.

Sunflower160 · 15/07/2019 09:28

Thanks everyone. I’ve tried using a large one as a sheet but it didn’t seem to help, he likes grasping at it and suckling/nuzzling. A smaller one is a good idea, I’ll see if this has the same effect!
