Turning a standard cot into a co-sleeper

Can I take off one side of our cot and push it against our matteress to create a side car cot? My DS is 8 months and outgrew his next2me a while ago. But he hates being in his cot away from us.

Yes we did this with ours. Luckily the cot bed mattress was exactly the same level as our bed, but we were prepared to drill a few extra holes for the base to slot into if needed. We rolled up a sheet and stuffed it down the far side to push the cot mattress against ours and avoid any gaps. We also cable tied to cot bed legs to the frame of our bed to stop it sliding away. It worked well!

Yep this is the sort of thing we did. Be prepared for a lot of people on here to tell you it's unsafe / you're a terrible parent for putting your child in danger blah blah blah! Ignore them.

We did exactly the same as HoneyBee...works perfectly 😬

SpongeCake23 · 11/06/2019 21:31

@kidsmakesomuchwashing why is it seen as unsafe?!

@HoneyBee03 we don’t have any cable ties, but will need to look at getting some in that case. Do the matteresses need to be the same level? They weren’t exactly the same level when we had our next2me cot.

I think it's seen as unsafe just because it's not purpose built or designed for that.

We did it with our ikea cot bed and it worked completely fine, just used the ties that were for the snuzpod and fastened it to the bed really tightly and made sure the slight gap between was stuffed with a rolled up towel with the fitted sheet over the top so no gap for baby to roll down.
The only thing that made me worry was that the side of the cot attached to the bed was slightly less stable because it relies on all four sides being on the cot to be able to bear much weight, I did worry that I'd end up half on it while feeding and collapse it, but that never happened so turned out fine for us 😊

We did this too. We bought the cheapest mothercare cot and also used cable ties to secure it. The cot mattress and bed one are totally flush and we just needed to push our mattress over.

DS is a tall 3.5yr old ands is still sleeping in it, so definitely one of the best value for money baby purchases!

I should say that DS sleeps all night in it now but in the earlier days when he was waking to feed and switching sides I would sometimes end up with my top half in the cot! It was nice to have the extra space and bore my weight just fine. Added bonus!
