My poor DH keeps having a reocurring dream/nightmare and its really starting to bother him...its so out if character for him, as is the dream/nigtmare. Does anyone know how to interpret dreams or know of a good website I can use?

I don't know of any websites Titania, but there is an excellent book called The Dictionary of Symbols which can be used to help unravel the meaning of dreams. There are loads of dream interpretation books available, but I don't know if they're any good - they always seem a bit pants to me.

libb · 14/09/2004 12:43

Dream moods.com is a good one - I have odd dreams and it seems to cover quite a lot - hope he gets his answer!

there is just him and this other 'being' in the dream...........we cant think what would cause this dream or associate it with anything

what sort of being?

or am I being too nosey?!

Titania · 14/09/2004 13:11

ok....this is it.......

he is in a field...a green field, turns around to see a figure in a long black hooded robe standing there.....quite a way away though...DH turns around to look where he is going, turns back again and sees this figure coming towards him very quickly.....he said in the dream he was scared at how quick this figure approached him, as he was quite a distance away. DH cant see a face and the figure doesnt speak....the figure suddenly brings out this sword....one that is curved (samurai type?) and starts hacking at DH and all DH sees is red and blood everywhere.....and he doesnt even fight back or try to defend himself....

then he wakes up in a real sweat.....poor love.....

its really starting to get to him.....he says that he cant work out why he doesnt fight back, as he normally has a bit more about him than that.

He is very fit in RL and does a lot of weight training, boxing etc.

Hi Titania, glad you brought this up as I had a very vivid dream I want to interpret.

How's dh's work situation? Is he under any more stress than normal? Is there something he feels he should be doing but hasn't got round to it yet?

sweetheart · 14/09/2004 13:22

Titania,

Has he tried to wake himself???

Sometimes you can control the way a dream goes or bring yourself out of it.

Tell him next time it happens to try and get his mind to control what is happening in the dream. Either try and wake himself up or to try and visualize the dream in slow motion and control both himself, but most importantly, the figure.

HTH

thanks to libb for the site - I've just interpreted my dream. It was DH giving me a ruby ring and proposing again? Apparently it means any suspicions I've had (I find it difficult to trust even though he's very loyal) will diminish and I'll realise he's loyal, or something like that lol. Also as it was a ruby ring it means passion and sexual desire

JuniperDewdrop · 14/09/2004 13:28

yes sweetheart i've tried that before, lucid dreaming I think it's called. There are ways he can prepare himself for bed too that can stop it. I think writing it all down as soon as he wakes is supposed to help. It must be awful for him, I be he dreads sleeping.

libb · 14/09/2004 13:30

Sweetheart, is that lucid dreaming you are talking about? I had a recurring dream for about 4 days in a row and it was horrible every time, then on the 5th day I was in the dream and thought "oh no you don't! enough is enough!" and fought back - I haven't had it since and I felt like something had lifted. I still have no idea what it was I was fighting. When I was married I used to have lucid dreams a lot but they are very rare now I am with DP.

I find dreams really fascinating.

Titania · 14/09/2004 13:33

he cant wake himself. he is under no more stress than usual at work and things at home are fine too. the only thing he hasnt got round to doing that he wants to do is for us to have another baby

Have you looked on the dreammoods.com site Titania?

Titania · 14/09/2004 13:39

yes.....cant find anything about the hooded figure

OP posts:
JuniperDewdrop · 14/09/2004 13:43

did u find anything about the sword though? and the blood

JuniperDewdrop · 14/09/2004 13:45

To dream that you are bleeding or losing blood, signifies that you are suffering from exhaustion or that you are feeling emotionally drained. It may also denote bitter confrontations between you and your friends. Your past actions has come back to haunt you. Women often dream of blood or of someone bleeding shortly before or during their periods and when they are pregnant.

libb · 14/09/2004 13:47

Don't forget colours, they can be important too. Maybe the figure is a particular aspect of your DH that he hasn't acknowledged yet. The colours, sword and blood are probably addintional clues.

Papillon · 14/09/2004 13:47

has he tried enacting as such the dream during the day and consciously repelling the hooded person (in wotever fashion he so desires) so that the person goes away?

prefernot · 14/09/2004 13:48

Titania, I've done a lot of dream analysis and have a PhD to my name if that's any help. But I think to do it properly one needs to have a proper conversation with the person dreaming the dream. The books of general symbols are, in my experience, no good as each person's unconscious is so varied a generalised description of something rarely fits all.

I would begin by asking him very basic questions like what does he think of when he imagines a green field. Does the shape or size of the hooded figure in any way resemble anyone he can think of.

I'd reassure him that the reason he doesn't fight back is a very normal part of sleep processes in which the body is immobile in REM (dream) sleep and a sense of that immobility creeps through into the dream itself. The fact that he remembers it means he is waking up (we don't remember dreams unless we've at least neared consciousness during them) from it, so although not 'fighting back' in the dream itself, he is 'releasing himself' from it.

Has he always been prone to nightmares?

Titania · 14/09/2004 13:54

prefernot....he has never had a nightmare before. not even as a child.

he loves fields....he loves the countryside...he feels as though he 'belongs' there.

The shape doesnt resemble anyone he knows/knew either.

Papillon....no he hasnt....i dont hink he could. 'macho' in him i suppose!!

I can only find about if you are holding a sword, not about someone attacking you with one.
