If I introduce a dummy for the evening will by baby need it throughout the night?

I couldn't help but give my 3 wk old a pacifier a couple of times during those difficult early evening hours when nothing else helped. Now I am worried he will start crying for it throughout the night if I keep giving it to him. And that every time it falls off I will need to get up and give it back to him. Has anyone been able to keep the dummy use to specific times only or babies get addicted to it and want it all the time?

Dc2 has it for sleep. He keeps it in all night pretty much. Never had the problem of waking up because he lost it. I do need to get rid of it now though.

We started using a dummy around 2/3 weeks too and he's now nearly 3 months old and only uses it on occasion.

I worried about the same thing and didn't want him to be reliant on having on in all the time but during the night when it falls out we just leave it and he doesn't notice, sometimes during the day in his naps he would notice but he doesn't seem overly bothered and doesn't want it back in Smile

Thanks for the replies, that makes me feel better! I hope we manage to keep it to occasional use only an it doesn't create more problems than it solves.. until weaning time.
@Nottalotta, how old is yours?

Hes 2. Pre ds1 i was firmly in the "no dummy" camp. Ds1 breast fed constantly, refused a bottle and by the time I tried a dummy out of desperation, still wouldn't take one. Ds2 had a bottle a day from early on, and start3d having a dummy around 3 months. My nights have been MUCH better as he has the dummy for comfort instead of wanting to feed all the time. It's time for it to go soon though.

He doesn't have it in the day. Teeth are fine and he has the vocabulary a 5 yr old would be proud of!

My DS is 9 weeks old. We introduced a dummy at around 3 weeks for the same reason, he was very agitated in evenings and wouldn’t settle. He only has it occasionally when upset or struggling to doze off. When asleep he spits it out and doesn’t need it for the rest of the night x

My ds has one from 10 days old. He would fall asleep then spit it out and only need it again when he’d next woken up for a feed
We did go through a few stages of a dummy in his mouth and a spare in his hand at all times. But he gave it up suddenly at 19 months.
