Help! 5 month old won’t sleep without being swaddled...

My 5 month old has been swaddled for naps and bedtime sleep since he was born.

He’s very tall for his age and so he’s currently in the sleepyhead inside the next to me but his legs are bent right up but he sleeps soundly.

Last night we decided it’s time to take the swaddle and sleepyhead away to give him some room and get him ready for him own room & cot.

Well it did not go well & he spent pretty much the whole night waking up grumpy/upset.

Is this a common problem and does anyone have any successful tips in how we can get him to sleep without being swaddled or his sleepyhead....?

Is there any rush? Personally I'm one of the go with what works in the first year. Sleep is precious.

Maybe just swaddle on its own if he's scrunched up?

Thank you for your reply. He’s just starting to roll over and I read that once he can roll over we have to stop swaddling him?

Most people sleep badly the first night under new circumstances (hotel room, first night of a holiday, etc etc)
See how he goes the next couple of nights.

I swaddled my lo until 6 months (he wasn't rolling though) and then transitioned him into something called a magic merlin suit. They look crazy but they work! My lo was in his merlin suit about 3 months before transitioning (finally and with no issue) a sleepsack.

Ah, that makes sense. Maybe a weighted blanket might help the transition although I don't know if they are advised for sleeping either. Or just waiting it out.

I had the same problem with my 1st he was a nightwear.. he was also a very tall baby (Duno if that is significant) I continued swaddling until he grew out of it, I did try but he was a very loud baby 🙈🙈 and he was my first so I could barely cope as it was 🤣🤣. I would just let him lead the way, to me it just wasn't worth the upset.

Nightmare.. not nightwear.. sometimes I wished he was nightwear Then maybe I would have got some sleep 🤣🤣

I stopped swaddling and had a couple of nights of restless sleep but then she was fine. Kept her in the sleepyhead for about a month after that and then we took that away. Worried a lot more than I should have, didn’t bother her one bit.

What's the problem? I can't sleep without my relaxation CD on all night Smile He's still very young.

I wouldn’t take the swaddle and the sleepyhead away at the same time, it’s too much change. Start by swaddling with one arm out for a few nights and see how that goes. Then both arms out.

Get him used to not being swaddled before you take the sleepyhead away. Some people also use rolled up towels under the cot sheet to replace the sleepyhead, then gradually move the towels further away.
