Just wondering how many months mums decided to put their baby in their own room for the night ?

I know the recommendation is 6months , but just interrelated to know if anyone did anything differently , the reasons why and how it went ?

:)

8 months for both of mine

Snowoctopus · 25/04/2019 19:59

Still co sleeping at 2 years 3 months old.

ifoundthebread · 25/04/2019 20:00

Dd in her own room from 4 months, would have been sooner but property we were in until then wasnt suitable.

Ds was 4 weeks, just felt it needed to be done.

mamatoizzybee · 25/04/2019 20:25

@ifoundthebread that's interesting, do you mind sharing your reasons behind the transition that early? My daughter is 2 months old and I'm considering potentially moving into her own room (we are in a very small terraced house and her room is literally right next door so wouldn't be moving that far away and we have a camera monitor )

Being in a small house and having a camera monitor won’t reduce the risk of your baby dying from SIDS. Only being in a room with an adult will do that.

We moved DD a few months before she was 2 years old.

Littlefroggy18 · 25/04/2019 20:33

My DD is 5 months, still with us overnight at the moment but has been having day time naps in her own room for the last couple of weeks. Planning on moving her overnight in a couple more weeks once she’s 6 months.

ifoundthebread · 25/04/2019 20:43

Looking back now I'd say it was probably because of the PND, but at the time I needed my room to be my space and my escape, even if it was only for a couple of hours at a time (he only recently started sleeping through just before his 1st birthday)

Thatsnotmyotter · 25/04/2019 20:50

DS is still in with us (well me currently due to DH’s broken neck and the horrific snoring his neck brace causes) at 7.5 months. We tried moving him at 6 months but it didn’t improve his sleep and I’d rather roll over and feed him than have to traipse into another room. He sleeps better now but still wakes a couple of times in the night and I’m still lazy! I feel like he still needs me tbh.

wintertravel1980 · 25/04/2019 20:56

I moved DD when she was 12 weeks old. She was always very sensitive to noises and our presence started to clearly disrupt her sleep. It went well. DD has been consistently "sleeping through the night" (7pm to 7am with one dream feed at 10.30pm) ever since.

I had done extensive research before I made this decision and I was aware I was going against UK safe sleeping recommendations. It is true that most of the existing evidence shows that room sharing may protect infants from SID. However all the studies are based on relatively old data (from 1990s - early 2000s). Nowadays the country with the lowest rate of SIDS is Netherlands. 80% of Dutch babies sleep in their own room from day one. Other countries that do not follow room sharing recommendations (e.g. France) have SIDS rates comparable to the UK.

polkadotpixie · 25/04/2019 21:25

My DS is nearly 8 months and still in with us and I plan to keep him there for a few more months. I do put him to bed at 8pm though and go downstairs and have done since he was about 3/4 months which is also against SIDS guidelines

user1493413286 · 25/04/2019 21:29

7 months as I noticed that DD was starting to be disturbed by DH getting up for work or either of us tossing and turning

SospanFrangipan · 25/04/2019 21:40

DS was 8 months, and I only did it then in preparation for me going back to work. He slept well in our room, but much better in his own room, and continues to do so now at 2 years old.

meow1989 · 25/04/2019 22:46

6 months but it didn't work so after a week was back in our room. 7 months went back but was waking several times a night. At 8 and a half months he had a bout of being poorly including 2 a and e admissions so I started bringing him in bed with me when he woke, which gradually went from 4am to 10pm!
Finally 3 weeks ago DH and I said enough is enough (I was sleeping o floor in his room to try to get him to stay in cot!). We decided to unite with shh pat, cuddle if necessary and stay in his room. Tentatively, we've had a good 2 weeks, ds is learning to self settle and is now wakin g once if that bar teething.

Short version; ds is probably only just ready for it at 10 months.

Phew!

countrymousesussex · 26/04/2019 08:32

4 months - she was really struggling to sleep through my tossing and turning. Now at 5 months she does 6.30-6.30, waking once or twice for a feed but that’s literally a case of make bottle, feed, put back in cot and she falls back asleep quickly.

Disclaimer: sometimes we enjoy an hour or so of X Factor style singing at 4am. We are also expecting the 4 month sleep regression any day now....

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 26/04/2019 08:37

3 months Blush he had outgrown his moses basket and we couldn't fit his cot in our room, its not advised to though.

Grimbles · 26/04/2019 21:30

My DD is 12 weeks and is in her own room, although one of us does sleep in there with her. She goes to bed at 8 and we usually go up around 11pm.

The door is left open so she can hear us and household noises plus we have a nightlight and music playing. There is a camera too.

mamatoizzybee · 26/04/2019 22:42

Thanks for all your replies .
@SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc - I know the feeling when you put this Blush as this is also our reasoning behind asking this question. Our daughter has very nearly outgrown her Moses basket and we cannot fit her cot in our room - nor can we fit a smaller crib thing in either . It would be a massive squeeze and the only place we could squeeze one in would block us getting to our bathroom which would mean we would wake her every time we tried to get past .

I understand the SIDS risks and the advise there etc , I'm not stupid which is why I'm gathering as much info as possible before making a decision

@countrymousesussex - I think we are also experiencing some of the tossing and turning you mentioned , our daughter goes for a solid 5-6 hours usually , and then after she wakes for her first feed , she tosses and turns when I put her back in her basket and makes lots of grunting noises !

countrymousesussex · 27/04/2019 19:05

Yes, this is exactly what we had! DH was on the sofa anyway as he snores like a train (people in adjacent hotel rooms have complained in the past 😩) but I found that I was having to sit in silence after each night feed until she was deeply asleep. Otherwise, if we were nodding off at the same time, I’d keep waking her and then she’d get all screamy and angry.

Against advice I know, but goodness me that girl is hell on wheels when overtired. She only has 4 x 30 min catnaps a day too!

happymummy12345 · 27/04/2019 19:09

16 months. Only then because we wanted to put him in a toddler bed, so needed him to be used to his own room first.

m4rdybum · 30/04/2019 18:00

I'm thinking of doing it when my LG is 5 months (when we get back from a holiday). Think we've hit the regression at the minute, so just going to ride that out for a while first.

I think me and DH disturb her by turning over and coming to bed at night, so I'm hoping it will help alleviate that issue.

Obviously there are guidelines on SIDS risks, which every takes into account in their own way.

cliquewhyohwhy · 30/04/2019 18:01

All mine were put in their rooms early around 3 months.

BumboBaggins · 05/05/2019 11:32

Both mine went into their own room at about 10 weeks. We did it with the first one because it got to the stage where I was so nervous about turning over in bed and waking the baby that I thought this is ridiculous. Baby was keeping us awake with lots of grunting and shuffling and we were probably keeping her awake! So off she went. Absolutely fine. And because we did it successfully with the first we just repeated it with the second, again absolutely fine. I wasn’t nervous except for the first couple of nights but after that it was ok. Whatever works for you! It is a bit taboo though these days I think....and of course the HV would probably castigate me for it!!
