Newborn growls in his sleep?!

Hi. My 3 week old DS was a very peaceful sleeper for the first 2 weeks, but over the last 5 days or so he has become really restless at night. All night he wriggles, moans, and makes sort of growling noises that he is very frustrated. I have offered him a feed at this point but he isn’t actually awake, his eyes are shut and he’s still asleep. It stops and starts all night. Is this normal? It has coincided with him feeding an awful lot more from me in the evenings and getting frustrated at the breast too! Someone suggested this could just be a growth spurt. I thought it could be something digestion related and we have tried winding him but that doesn’t seem to be the issue either.

My son made a lot of funny noises in his sleep when he was a newborn, gradually got quieter after about six weeks. I would say if he’s not waking/crying then just leave him be.

It’s normal.

It probably is wind related- their digestion systems are constantly growing/stretching/maturing at that age.

If it isn’t waking him up or causing him breathing difficulties leave him well alone to sleep. And remember everything is a phase and it will pass.

Aww bless. That sounds so cute. Sorry, OP, it probably isn’t so cute at 3am.

Our DD has done this since birth & is now 13 weeks old. We've ruled out wind, hunger & pain - she's just a noisy sleeper.

I imagine it will get less & less but most likely the only way I'll sleep through will be when she moves into her own room.

I remember mine making grunting noises when they were tiny babies. Someone said that it’s to do with immature airways and that they will grow out of it, which they did!
