Help me move my 10 month old into her own room

We are thinking about trying to move DD into her own room after Easter, she will be about 10 months old. Possibly might get delayed a bit though as she's been quite unwell for most of the last month (started nursery!) so obviously we will wait til she's 100% better.

I don't really know where to start though. It feels like it should be a simple thing but I think I've missed the boat age-wise for it to be simple, as she clearly has good understanding of her surroundings now. She still wakes in the night sometimes, especially when she's unwell etc which I know is normal, until very recently she was waking many times a night needing help to find her dummy hence why we've kept her in our room (she sleeps in a cotbed at the head of our bed). However before she got ill, she has got pretty good at finding the dummies on her sleepytot bunny now, so she only needs help maybe once in the night or sometimes not at all. It will be a pain for us going into and out of her bedroom but it will probably be better for her because she gets disturbed by us a lot at the moment as she's such a light sleeper generally.

So...how do I do this? Just stick her in it one night and keep at it? How long should I stick with it before giving up if it's awful (I'm not wedded to the idea so I was thinking of giving it a fortnight or so?)? At the moment also she falls asleep with her dummy on either me or DH and then we transfer her to bed on a night, sometimes she wakes briefly when being put down but goes back off as she's in familiar surroundings, other times she doesn't wake at all, occasionally she has a little cry and needs patting/rocking for a bit in her bed. Should I tackle the going-to-bed-awake thing first before trying to move her into her own room or just continue as we have been doing? Should I try and get her familiarised with her own room before putting her to sleep in it e.g. playing in it, naps maybe? And for how long?

Hi - I went through this exact same situation a few months ago when DD was 7 months.

What I did was start with naps in the cot during the day - but using black out blinds. It got her used to waking and falling asleep in.

I also breastfed during the day in the room in a nice comfy nursing chair ... she would look around the room then as well and know it was cosy and safe....

When it came to the first night I moved all her blankets ... sheets from the bassinet next to our bed into the cot - familiar smell! Did our usual breastfeed, cuddles book read in the comfy chair and then transferred into cot when ready for bed. She woke up a couple of times but got used to it right away. But I think the day naps really helped.

You might be surprised how easy your Bub finds the move. We did! As long as mummy cuddles and similar bedtime routine - they do ok!

Good luck!

Unfortunately I think it's not going to be super easy as I've been away with her 3 times now and each time she has been awful at least the first few nights when waking in the night til she got used to where she was. Like waking up in a panic and screaming the place down for 3 hours and or waking every hour and needing rocking back to sleep each time...but I'm hoping if I can familiarise herself with the room for a bit first maybe it won't be quite so bad or at least not for long?! We have blackout curtains in our room and the same ones just a different colour in DD's room so that's already sorted. How long did you get your DC to do naps in the room etc for before you put them to sleep on a night in it?

I just started with the first morning nap and then built up from there. Because the bassinet is so much smaller - she actually enjoyed having more room in the cot.

I would just give it a go - the longer you leave it the worse it gets! The more stressed you become.

Try the morning nap. See how she goes.
