Purflo pods - are they safe?

Hi

Just wondering why purflo pods are not allowed to be used unsupervised. If they are breathable and washable what are the risks?

My newborn is 3 weeks and wont sleep unless on me or my husband so looking for help. We have a chicco side cot but he won't settle at all.

Thanks

This is what the lullabye trust says:

Pods/nests

Pods or nests are a softer type of sleep surface sometimes used instead of or in addition to a mattress, with areas that are raised or cushioned. When sleeping, babies shouldn’t lie on or have anything soft around them, particularly their heads, as this can cause them to overheat and increases the risk of SIDS. Soft, squishy materials can also cover baby’s mouth and nose if they are pressed against it.It is also important to remember that while there is a British Standard for cot mattresses, there is no standard for pods or nests as a sleeping place for babies.

Thank you!

I seen this however the purflo is breathable cushions so babies head against it wouldn't suffocate and the bottom is must mesh lining so it would still be the firm matress?

A mattress should be flat with no raised edges. The cushion near the head may cause overheating rather than suffocation

Have you tried a sleepyhead?

Dolphin27 · 08/03/2019 18:45

I looked at sleepyhead but it states the same. Not to use unsupervised.. However then goes on to explain how to use it in a cot and for Co sleeping?

So confused.

The purflo explinations say the mesh and breathable meterial help better support temperature control?

It's just so conflicting

We used the purflo - felt it was safe but don't know how much it improved sleep. When we started using Velcro swaddle things (look on amazon) I felt that they did make a significant difference.

At 3 weeks ds was in my arms for 23 hours a day. It was exhausting. He's now nearly 8 weeks and slept 9 hours through on his own in his Moses basket for the last two nights. We never resorted to pods etc as I think they are meant to be close for those early weeks. Once they slowly start to settle on their own they start to go for longer and longer.
We transferred him into his basket whilst asleep, still do mostly. As long as they are fed, warm and dry they learn to settle eventually. I have the Moses right by the bed so if he stirs I can put my hand on his chest so he still knows we're close.
Honestly I would persevere with transferring to a flat mattress whilst asleep. Then staying close so if they wake they don't have time to freak out.

Although saying that he's going into his big cot this weekend as the basket is too small so we might be back to square one before I know it Hmm

It's one those things you have to decide what level of risk you are comfortable with.

I used a purflo nest for both children up to the age of about 4 months when they started rolling over and they didn't feel as safe in them any more. Until that point with non mobile babies on their backs they were a preferred option over co-sleeping for me.

The lullaby trust advice about sleepyheads etc came out in between DC1 and DC2. I looked into it and came to the conclusion that it was a case of using with caution rather than abandon altogether.

Thanks everyone. I totally agree and would be happy to just have the contact and go with it. However after two weeks with very little sleep I'm starting to fall asleep when breastfeeding and as he was premature I'm not allowed to Co sleep (not that this would help as he wants to be ON me not next to me) so I'm worried about safety, so trying to find other options which may help and are safer than me falling asleep while he feeds!

We do swaddle him with the proper swaddle blankets and it helps a bit but not all that much.

Also tried hot water bottle before putting him down, white noise etc.

Thanks again
