Ok to sleep on side?

My 5 month old likes to sleep on his side. We put him down on his back, but he will turn over and only go to sleep on his side. We have been turning him into his back once asleep but he will turn back onto his side almost immediately. I'm losing loads of sleep trying to get him on his back. He can only roll back to front, not yet front to back (except by accident) so I'm worried about leaving him to sleep on his side unsupervised at night, in case he falls onto his front and can't correct himself. I'm pretty sure he would turn his head (or complain) but even on his side, his face is sometimes tilted towards the mattress so I do worry about air flow etc. We're in the same room, but obviously I need to sleep too at some point, I can't be continuously turning him all night or watching him sleep. Shall I just let him get on with it, am I being over anxious? Or keep trying to get him on his back?

My ds had reflux and my step mum suggested putting him on his side. We more or less wedged him in place so he couldn't roll on to his front. With props between his body and the edge of the Moses basket. I know it goes against the advice but it was a life saver for us as it improved his sleep so much. I think he'll be going back and forth before long by the sound of it.

I was told whilst it's important to put them down on their backs, if they start to move around in their sleep it's okay - just roll them onto their back if you happen to spot it but you don't need to stay up watching him.

I know it's hard not to worry but your sleep is so important too! If you've put him down on his back in a safe sleep environment then you've done everything right! If you want to be more proactive, you're best off increasing tummy time during the day and help encourage him to roll front to back - rather than getting sleep deprived which can be dangerous.

Thanks Ark we do lots of tummy time so hopefully the front to back rolling should happen soon.
