baby screaming whilst asleep! Is this normal?

My dd cries and screams in her sleep which makes for very unsettled nights for the rest of the family! She is 7 months old, eats well, naps well in the day, although she is still not going through the night and usually has a feed around midnight, then sleeps till around half six. However, whilst she sleeps, she moans and cries which of course wakes us up and makes it difficult to get back to sleep. Is this normal? Can I stop it? She rarely wakes herself up doing it, and usually gets herself back to sleep if she does. Please help!

Ds didn't exactly scream, but was a very noisy sleeper. In his case, more like grunting and groaning. It was terrifying at first, I thought he must be in real pain. Luckily one of my friends had a baby who was doing the same thing, so I was reassured. And it didn't wake him up, so I worked out he must have been OK.
In the end he grew out of it. Main issue for us, once we'd realised he was all right, was that he kept us awake!
If you are concerned about it, worth mentioning to your health visitor or doctor, but since dd's happy in the daytime and either doesn't wake herself up or settles back down when she does, it's probably just one of those things (aren't they all?).

Dd and ds both did this. An ear splitting yell at the same timeevery night. I'd belt up the stairs and they woul dbe fast asleep. According to my MIL dh did it too!!! They have now grown out of it

dd2 does this. She really weeps. If you wake her up, she is her usual sunny self (but then awake for the duration, which is why we tend to leave her). She has done it since she was about 5/6 months old. Soothing words seem to help, although she really is fast asleep

My DS also still does this (now 13 mths) and I'm still having trouble with it - see my thread "Help! At end of tether...etc". Any suggestions?

I don't think there is any such thing as normal anymore...
nevertheless sounds a bit like tummy discomfort?

if you go through the usual suspects..wind..overfeeding,underfeeding,indigestion,reflux,colic (that catch all term!)..
maybe you can you cut out the midnight feed... get her in her own room, and turn off the monitor...
I bet she will sleep .. like a ... er...
Baby??!!!!
good luck.

My ds used to do this screaming in his sleep when he was teething. I think you can tell by the cry - it was a really bloodcurdling sound. could she be teething stellar?

stellarmum · 08/09/2004 21:21

I'm fairly sure it's not teething, as she's been doing it for so long now! How on earth do you drop that night time feed... if she doesn't get it, she just wakes around half one or so yelling for it! She is a big girl-25 pounds at 7 months, and I think she is genuinely hungry when she wakes!
She is still in our room though, so will move her into own room... and buy everyone ear plugs nice to know I'm not alone though.. thank you!
