Paranoia over room temp, sleeping bag and layers

My baby is 4 months today. I’m pretty obsessed with him overheating & have been since he was a newborn.
We have a gro egg which currently shows the temp to be 19.5 and yellow with a smiley face.
I know it’ll drop down in the night to around 19.
He’s currently asleep in his next2me cot in a short sleeve vest, sleep suit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag. I’m now panicking I’ve over dressed him, but don’t want to wake him up to take layers off, if it’s not necessary.

Anyone have any advice?
I’m constantly checking to see if he’s breathing Sad I thought I’d be getting over this stage by now. It’s becoming a bit all consuming.

What you've described is what he should be wearing at that temperature according to the advice. Short sleeve vest, long sleeve sleep suit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag if it's between 16 and 20 degrees. Why do you think he's too hot?

SpongeCake23 · 17/02/2019 22:16

@RubyBoots7 Oh right, I thought the advice was sleepsuit OR long sleeve bodysuit, not a short sleeve vest and sleepsuit.

I'd maybe have a chat with your midwife or health visitor... for me this was a sign of pnd. If it's really distressing you and you cant sleep for worrying even when your baby is fast asleep it is worth talking to someone about it..
I went so loops as my son, my first, was born midsummer and I was absolutely obsessed with the temperature but of course it was a heatwave so the room temperature was never within the safe guidelines!!! I just used to stay awake watching him breathe...I was just sure he would stop breathing in his sleep....
Of course he didnt and hes 4 now.

With my second baby I dont think I've actually even once gotten out the room thermometer... I just check to see if her chest is hot and if it's not I assume shes fine!

My baby used to wear nappy, short sleeved vest, baby grow/sleep suit (long sleeve) and grobag. I must admit I have it a bit warmer than 19 as my daughter seemed to get a bit cold at that temp and I didn't like the idea of adding blankets but I agree with @rubyroots and that grobag link was a life saver for me with all the snow/crazy heatwave of last year! Even with the windows open our room was 26 at one point last year, you can't always control the weather. Did stress me out plenty!!

I was really really anxious about temperature at that stage too. It got easier for me so I hope it will for you.

What you've described sounds fine. I once panicked on Mumsnet too and posters reminded me that babies live is boiling climates every day and do fine. It'll be ok, OP.

My baby is 16 weeks and he wears vest, sleepsuit, 2.5 tog but on especially cold nights he likes a thin blanket too

BringMeThatHorizon · 18/02/2019 11:01

I'm also confused by this! My DS is 4 months and the room is around 18/19 degrees overnight, maybe dropping down to 16/17 briefly in the early hours. I've been going by the gro chart linked above, and so he's just in a long sleeve bodysuit (no legs) under the 2.5 tog bag. Everyone's responses seem to be saying that they have their babies in way more clothes than this?

I’ve found that my 4.5 month old prefers to wear less to sleep in so she is in a long sleeved vest under a 2.5 tog bag and room is around 19c. I think each baby is slightly different and my health visitor said that baby will shout if they are too hot or too cold so I would go with what works for your little one x

Ribbonsonabox · 18/02/2019 16:25

Some babies like to be warmer than others as well remember... I think the guidelines are just guidelines tbh... use your common sense and knowledge of your own child.
Check the skin on thier chest with your hand if it's too hot then your child is too hot!
If your baby is crying and wont settle and theres no other apparent reason, it may be that they are too cold.
Your baby gets colder than you would by about one layer.... so if you are happily sleeping in just a vest and a duvet your baby is probably only going to need one more layer than that... so a body suit over a vest then their sleeping bag.
