10 month old waking at 4am - what the hell

Our 10 month old has been waking everyday at 4am for almost a week now. She usually wakes up at 6am.

We initially thought it was to do with the tummy bug she had, but she's better now and still doing it! Once or twice she went down again after an hour after much encouragement, but usually that's her up. I then put her down again around 7am - is this the right thing or should I push her till 9am which is when I'd normally put her down?

I'm not coping well with this. Is this yet another sleep regression? When will it end? Help Sad

Anyone please?

I would pop her into your bed when she wakes at 4am, have a cuddle and she will likely drop back off.

cornflakes5 · 16/02/2019 15:29

Thank you thesearms unfortunately she's a terrible sleeper and will already be in our bed by this point!

Milk? DD went through a phase like this at a similar age. I kept getting up thinking she was waking for the day but realised she actually was still very tired. Started giving her a couple of ounces of milk then she'd go back to sleep. Was wary about introducing a night feed again but couldn't get her back off any other way! Anyway after a week or so she stopped waking and began sleeping through again. Think she was maybe having a growth spurt or something.

dancemom · 17/02/2019 16:56

Is she hungry? Could you give a snack / supper before bed?

Is she tired upon waking? If so try wake to sleep method

If she's not tired try making her bedtime later but only increase by 15 minutes every 3 nights so would be a very gradual change

NabooThatsWho · 17/02/2019 16:57

What time are you putting her to sleep at night?

ShabbyAbby · 17/02/2019 16:58

I had to start giving supper at that age, and sometimes a dream feed again. Growth spurt or big developmental change

Narya · 17/02/2019 17:05

What time does she go to bed? Can you keep her up a bit later in the evening? Do you feed her when she wakes? 13 mo DS goes to bed at 7.30 pm, then regularly wakes around 4 am but will go back down until about 7.30 am if I feed him. He's followed this pattern since he was about 9 months old.

cornflakes5 · 17/02/2019 17:06

Thanks everyone. So she still takes multiple breastfeeds through the night. She gets her dinner at 5pm, then bed just after 6pm. She used to sleep until 6am (with multiple feeds) but now she's up at 4am, no matter what I offer her at 4am!

If she's a terrible sleeper, 6 is a very early bedtime. I'd push that later personally.

cornflakes5 · 17/02/2019 18:10

We're doing that over the next month, to around 7pm. The thing is, she did used to wake up at 6am rather than 4am. Why this sudden change? Did anyone else experience this?

Yep, dd did this for month (!!) and nothing I tried worked. It almost drove me to insanity. I have no tips at all, but she stopped as soon as she started. So hopefully it’s the same for you!

cornflakes5 · 17/02/2019 18:16

Thank you teddy - was there a word missing after 'started'? What's the magic thing that stopped the craziness please??

I honestly don’t know! She just started waking up again at 6:30 and has done since. I didn’t change anything at all, after having tried no naps, more naps, later bedtime, more food etc etc. I just gave up and committed myself to a lifetime of being up at 4am. And then she just started waking up again at her usual time.

No help whatsoever I know! But it might give you hope knowing it’s temporary.

cornflakes5 · 17/02/2019 18:22

One month did you say, or months plural? Confused

Just the one! She was a bit older so I could sort of say to her “it’s nighttime, back to sleep!” Which didn’t work in the slightest but made me feel a bit better. I posted on here at my absolute wits end about it, tried all the advice and nothing worked. Just had to ride it out with her. Fecking horrible in the midst of it though.

itsgoingtoofast · 17/02/2019 18:45

My 10 month old has started doing exactly the same. I have no idea why! I suppose another phase that will pass..... one sleep regression seems to have blended into the next. I thought we were getting somewhere but apparently not!

PlinkPlink · 17/02/2019 18:48

Hi,

I chatted to my health visitor around this time for DS.

She said it's normal for them to wake at about 3am or 4am and just be wide awake, have a little party etc.
All part of their brain development I think she said.

It'll settle down eventually. In the meantime, stock up on coffee and sleep when you can.
It does pass I promise!

cornflakes5 · 17/02/2019 20:52

I'm very glad I'm not alone at least. I'm just so, so tired, it's a new low. She's in our bed from when we go to bed, and she will not settle unless I'm wrapped around her in an S shape like a shrimp. It's lovely in a way and I'm sure I'll miss it when she's out of this phase, but goodness do I feel miserable right now.

Oh you poor thing.

We used to co-sleep... all 3 of us somehow squished in. And I would go to sleep at the same time as DS at 8pm. It worked out well really as I got to catch up on sleep... But I missed being able to do things without a baby constantly pressed into me 🙄🙄

It will get better xx
