Active sleeper - hitting head on cot

My DS is nearly 9 months old. He’s always been a pretty rubbish sleeper but recently it’s been improving. He used to sleep in a sleepyhead when he was a newborn, then had a spell of sleeping well in a cot, then we had such awful sleeping that cosleeping was the only way!

Now that sleep has improved I really want to stop cosleeping. I’m a deep sleeper and it doesn’t feel safe. The issue is that my DS is very active in his sleep and rolls around a lot, so when he’s in the cot he hits his head on the sides and this causes him to wake up a lot.

What are my best sleeping options for him?? I’m wondering bumpers, a floor bed, a travel cot with soft sides... What have you done that was successful. Help me please people of Mumsnet!!

I put mesh cot bumpers on the sides which help with arms and legs not going through the bars and head hitting the side. Dd head still hits the top but doesn't seem to bother her

I feel like there’s not enough padding on the mesh bumpers, and that he’s still going to roll and give his head a good wack and wake up.. He does roll with some force!

Dd would do this at the same age, but eventually grew out of needing to be resettled by DH or I- from about 11 months she would wake, do a shout and then find her dummy and go back to sleep on her own.

We had this with DS. He went into a travel cot at about 8-9 months and is still in it now at nearly 2. We bought a proper mattress for him, obviously!

Bumpers of any kind are not safe so I would avoid those. I've got a roller too and honestly he's just learnt to go back to sleep. It did take a while, and I had to rescue him a fair few times - arms and legs stuck through the bars at funny angles, wedged the wrong way in the cot, etc. but he rarely does it now. I think he's learnt the constraints of his cot! If you want to contain him a decent travel cot may work. Would he not just roll off a floor bed?

Thanks for the replies!

It’s good to think he’s going to out grow this!

I wonder if the active at night might be because he’s so active through the day with crawling and trying to walk.

I’ve got a travel cot I’m going to dig out of the loft and try that for the soft sides, hopefully his mattress will fit in.

I wondered about a double bed size floor mattress and finally move him into his own room, then I thought if it was a bad night I could just sleep in with him. Ikea do firm foam doubles that aren’t very thick so if he fell off that it wouldn’t be far to go.

But will try the travel cot first.

Also problem is now he’s not used to being transferred into a cot after so long sleeping next to the boob!
