Giving 8 week old a dummy?

Do any of you mums who use dummies have any regrets? OH been working nights and I've been stressed doing the evening settle alone. She is sucking her hand like mad and has been for a week so I tried one and she instantly went to sleep. Didn’t need to walk round the flat humming little donkey, nothing.

My fear is her becoming reliant on it. It fell out her mouth just now and she instantly started getting aggy. Does it set you up for a continuous struggle of ‘wheres the dummy’? I’m scared... help

I have DD the MAM glow in the dark dummies so they were easier to find. When she got to about 5ish months and she kept loosing it I let her play with it durring the day so she could find it. At 9 months she only had it strictly for sleep time unless she was unwell. She gave it up at 2.5 years a couple of months ago and it was no where near as bad as I expected.

Sorry I’ve just reread your post, if you’ve already introduced it I wouldn’t take it away now. That’s what increases the chances of sids because she will have established a sucking reflex while asleep! 😇

I gave DS a dummy when he was in hospital at 4 weeks. It was a godsend. He stopped sucking it one day at 9 months and never sucked one again. Happy days.

Jackshouse · 17/01/2019 18:41

Lbwestf123 Do not introduce a dummy at 8 weeks it is shown to increase the chances of SIDS if not used from birth!

Where did you hear that? I can’t find anything else on the lullaby trust. The only thing I can find is not to remove a dummy before 6 months because it can reduce the risk of SIDS very slightly.

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 17/01/2019 18:41

DD1 wouldn’t take one and so used me as a dummy instead. I made bloody sure DD2 used one and made sure she played with it as she got older so that she could replace it herself. She gave it up off her own back at about 9 months. If I had a third I would insist upon them using one again.

I am a student midwife and that’s what we were taught in our sids training. I’ll try and find a source for you!

Reccy2018 · 17/01/2019 18:44

Total bullshit about it increasing SIDs. Terrible thing to say to a new mum.

I have no regrets introducing a dummy.

planespotting · 17/01/2019 18:45

I thought if anything they reduced the SIDS risk Hmm
We didnt use one at all but most of my friends did OP

www.lullabytrust.org.uk/safer-sleep-advice/dummies-and-sids/ Pay no mind to the "student midwife."

It was a godsend; I am trying to get DD off it now but the benefits (sleep) definitely outweighs the negatives

This is all I could find maybe they’ve changed the guidance.

It definitely says to not to take it away once reintroduced.

That’s what I meant in my PP but not worded correctly at all!

Didn’t meant to be terrible!

Lbwestf123 · 17/01/2019 18:53

They do reduce sids risk. It’s if you introduce and then take away.

I’ve asked for my original comment to be deleted! :)
