I've FINALLY managed to get a decent amount of milk (3oz breastmilk mixed with 2oz formula - of which he had 4oz) down DS3 and he STILL won't let me put him down for a nap - fell asleep in my arms but woke up when I put him down. When DH gives him a bottle he'll fall asleep, DH will put him down and he'll actually sleep !

Gah!! As wonderful as they are, they are incredibly perverse sometimes!!

fannyannie · 25/06/2007 16:43

oh and before anyone suggests I put him down awake - we've tried that and he just screams blue murder.....

how old?

fannyannie · 25/06/2007 16:45

just over 4 weeks old.......he'd have probably slept for England if I'd left him in my arms - he does when he's had the breast........but I can't put him down!

Have you tried putting him in a sling? You can get on with stuff while they sleep then. DD1 lived in hers while she was new, I figured she'd been inside for 9 months and outside for 4 weeks so it was okay to hold onto her for a bit longer.

sounds very familiar - my ds 7mths and will only bf to sleep with me. when dad picks him up he crashes straight away.

i put vds on belly he stays asleep better - yours a bit young though. have you tried expressin milk onto a pad so he thinks your'e still close

I do have a sling - but when he's in it I have to adjust the straps (rather uncomfortably) for him to be able to latch on - and I end up with a sore back by the end of the day. I don't really mind him sleeping in my arms - I've learned how to get things done in the brief moments of respite I get when he goes (awake) into his bouncy chair - but it's frustrating that he'll sleep on his own when DH puts him down - but not when I do.

oops - not vds!! ds

fannyannie · 25/06/2007 16:49

DM - I did that this morning - he gave me just long enough to get a (very quick) shower and get dressed (literally threw the clothes on) before he was awake and crying again.

Would it help if you put something with your smell on it down with him? Perhaps a muslin or something under your boob while you're feeding so that it's warm and smells milky, then put it under his head when you put him down?

I may be talking rubbish as ds was older than this when he came to us, so please feel free to ignore me if it's a silly idea for a small baby.

saralou · 25/06/2007 17:29

ds2 is just over 6 months, only now can i put him down without him waking up!

have you tried swaddling him? i found it easier to transfer ds2 that way.

lovely photo's by btw! handsome boys

fannyannie · 25/06/2007 18:38

yep we've tried the swaddling - whether he has a bottle or breast he's wrapped up nicely in a sheet and transferred that way.

Mind you it gets better - just got 3oz of formula down him (a first he hasn't touched it for me before now) all be it on my knee but at "arms length" but he drank it - and he STILL won't let me put him down!

Sleep is not associated with the amount of milk babies have IMO. Babies just love to be cuddled and love being rocked.

Do you have a big pram or a buggy?

Big prams are better for rocking babies I think. What you can do is pop him in the pram and then push it back and forward over a flat slipper on the floor - that gives the impression of cracks in the pavement. Usually works a treat. Depends on size of buggy wheels whether that will work.

fannyannie · 25/06/2007 18:45

I have a lovely big carrycot for the pram - but having had to push him 45 minutes walk to have his newborn hearing test done the other day - with him tired (he'd fallen asleep in my arms (again) and I'd woken him up putting him in their) and screaming I've discovered it doesn't work (used to work with DS1 who was even WORSE than DS3 in that he wouldn't take a bottle, and only slept attached to the breast for very short intervals! but unfortunately not with DS3.

Stubborn little monkey .
