DS and second on the way - I understand that babies can't share mattresses, but what about bedding? Sheets, gro bags, blankets etc.. do these all need to be brand new too?

I believe it's just the mattress that should be new. All other bedding is fine to reuse!

I did reuse the mattress as it had a removable washable cover and the mattress itself was waterproof and could be cleaned. All other bedding is fine to be reused too

I believe the risks with used mattresses are thought to relate both to cleanliness and firmness. You might know your own mattress is clean but one from an unknown family could have been exposed to tobacco smoke for instance and they can be hard to clean. The firmness of a mattress also decreases with age so there may be a risk. I think this is all theiry, as of course you can never tell what exactly happened with a SIDS death, they oh know risk factors.

Bedding can be washed at 60 to kill bacteria and flatness isn't a consideration so is fine to reuse.

My sister told me it's something to do with baby sick being toxic ? I don't know but as long as it's all machine washed on a higher temp or with Dettol then it's fine, Iv always had a waterproof sheet on DD mattress so would re use it, it's brand new....

HJWT · 15/12/2018 22:21

Sorry I just googled it and it's to do with Bacteria that can cause SIDS, so like I said anything washable on higher temp or use dettol is fine, same with mattress is used with protective cover and waterproof sheet as well as aired out regularly should last a good few years if it's not a cheap foam one x

You can re-use your owm mattress. Thr concern is buying a second hand mattress as you don't know anything about it.

If its still firm and clean then it's fine

Lazypuppy · 16/12/2018 14:01

Oh and everything else doesn't have to be new. I've bought most of my LO's sleeping bags etc second hand and sell the ones she grows out of
