19 month old DD sleeping on the floor?

19 month old DD has been a great sleeper for the last 12 months. She would self settle most of the time and sleep through till 6-7 am. She would also nap happily in her cot in the day. Suddenly around a month ago she decided she hates the cot and would scream when put in bed. We took the side off in case she felt trapped but still no change. She will however fall asleep happier on the floor on a mat or her mattress (on the floor). Can this be a permanent solution? DH is considering removing the cot from her room and letting her sleep on her mattress but I'm not sure! Anyone had a similar experience with their toddler? Thanks!

What about a futon, they're quite low to the ground. Sometimes a mattress directly on the floor can create moisture.

LastMinutesAndLostEvenings · 09/12/2018 20:00

Would it be ok if we lifted the mattress each morning to prevent moisture?

Perhaps time for a low bed?

BiscuitDrama · 09/12/2018 20:03

I slept on the floor with my youngest for about three years. Our mattress was fine re moisture but I’d lift it if you can.

I would say the cot mattress on the floor is ok, i would leave the cot though, just incase she wanted to ever go back in it.

I would take the mattress off the floor every morning tho, and put it back down just before she goes to bed

Londonlass that what I was thinking, as she might change her mind completely in a few weeks again!

What about a cot bed or low toddler bed? She may like the big girl bed, 19 months is a bit old for a cot

We had DD on a single mattress on the floor Montessori style from just over a year old, we coslept beforehand as she hated any form of enclosure. Has worked fantastically for us, now she's over two she is in a single sized platform/storage bed as she can climb in and out safely. She has a cot sized duvet still though

My DC had a toddler bed at 18 months because of a hatred of being in the cot. Loved the new big bed!

She currently has a cot bed without the side so it's low but seems to still hate getting in it! Toddlers are strange Hmm

That's it. It might just be a phase.

I sleep with ds on a mattress on the floor. He isn't safe in a bed and isn't ready to stop bed sharing so this was the compromise. Call it a Montessori bed if you want to make it sound better Grin

Most toddlers I know have had periods of floor sleeping even without a mattress! Just lift it each day so it airs and your child sees it as part of the bed still. They might change their mind in a couple of weeks.

Also 19 months old is not too old for a cot! My 18 mths old will be in his cot until he starts climbing out!

LastMinutesAndLostEvenings · 09/12/2018 21:03

Thanks everyone I think I just needed some reassurance! Will keep using the mattress on the floor if she likes it but put it back in bed in the morning so she still sees it as her bed like you say.
Emma Yes I agree, DD would still be in her cot if she wasn't a climber!
