Sleepyhead deluxe

Hi,

My 3 week old only sleeps if being held. My partner and I are taking it in shifts during the night but both of us are struggling to stay awake at all times whilst holding him. This I am aware is very dangerous. He does sleep in his poddle podd but as it has to be supervised sleep this doesn't help with the problem. My health visitor told me to co-sleep but the thought of that scares me in terms of his safety.

Lots of people have said to get the sleepyhead deluxe as their babies sleep overnight in them...however looking at the guidelines the advice is babies should not be sleeping over night, unsupervised in these also.

However lots of people seem to do it with no issues....and from my point of view...it would be safer than falling asleep whilst cradling my boy. I feel like I would try co-sleeping if he was in the sleepyhead.

What are your views, do you have one...is it worth the cost and do you use it overnight?

Thank you

I have one and have used it since birth. I put it into.the next to me crib. My dd had meningitis at 9 days old and was hospitalised for 3 weeks, and I used it in hospital too. All the doctors and nurses said it was fine, and safe to do so

SS1987 · 27/11/2018 17:46

Our DD sleeps in it for naps and at night time, it was expensive but worth it. Makes them feel secure!

SK166 · 27/11/2018 17:57

Our little girl has been in hers since 2 weeks and it has really helped. It’s not a miracle solution but it helped us wean her off sleeping on us and it’s been useful when travelling etc. She’s now 4 months and realistically is too big for it but trying to take it away has been a disaster!

I know the official advice is not to use them but you have to do your research and weigh the risks for your individual circumstances. When we were considering it, I spoke to a friend who’s a GP and we reasoned that as she was a big, strong baby with good muscle tone and very good head control from birth, she was extremely unlikely to be able to get herself into a position in it where she could suffocate. But each to their own and others’ concerns about it may be valid for their babies.

Thank you for your comments. I think we are going to give it a go. I agree it's a personal decision to weigh up the risks. I personally feel that if he won't settle in his moses basket....then any other option is going to carry a risk...whether that is sleeping on us with the risk of us falling asleep...or the risk of co-sleeping. I feel the sleepyhead carries least risk and they seem to have pretty good resale value in terms of the cost. I have found the pressure of worrying about SIDs pretty stressful to be honest. It's such a horrible thought that something we do wrong could cause something terrible to happen to our boy. Thank you again for comments

We were in your position and the sleepyhead was a Godsend. We came to the view that it was the least risky option as well. From my research, the sleepyhead has never been linked to an incident of infant mortality. It seemed to me it wasn’t lullaby trust approved because it isn’t flat but that there was no positive evidence of it being unsafe, if that makes sense.

Tilliebean · 28/11/2018 08:57

I’m another lover of the Sleepyhead. DD1 would only sleep on us. I was trying to cosleep with her on my chest. It was way too dangerous in my mind. So I got the Sleepyhead. DD1 settled into it quickly and we were able to move it into her cot pretty quickly. I have even put my mouth and nose into the side of it and was able to breathe.
DD2 is in it now and sleeping well. Obviously I would love to have my girls sleep in completely safe environments but they have their own ideas!! The Sleepyhead feels like the safest alternative to us. If you look up the stats on SIDS, the highest percentage were from parents falling asleep in unsafe places (like sofas) with the baby.
Try not too worry too much about SIDS. I drove myself crazy thinking about it with DD1. In reality about 40 babies die of SIDS in Scotland per year... there are roughly 50,000 births!! The risk is much the same for the U.K. as a whole. The odds are so small, just be as safe as you can!

If the guidelines for Sleepyhead and Poddlepod for overnight sleep are the same and you already have a Poddlepod which baby sleeps in, why not just stick to that for overnight sleep? Its a similar concept and both are made of breathable materials

PazRaz10 · 28/11/2018 10:20

I didn't use one myself, but I don't know anyone who has regretted getting one and friends have all raved about theirs. In terms of cost, they have a good 2nd hand value if you decide to sell it on.

PazRaz10 · 28/11/2018 10:23

posted too soon.......

I made a similar snug in the crib using a towel rolled up like a sausage, shaped like the sleephead, under the fitted sheets. It worked for both of mine.

snapped1234 · 28/11/2018 10:31

Do it! Used ours since birth - it's the best thing we bought. Sleeps through the night at 4 months and he loves it! We've been away a few tunes & taken it too.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 28/11/2018 10:31

We had a sleepyhead for the exact same reasons that you are struggling now. It was a godsend.

I was also worried about safety, so I emailed the company that makes them to ask about the risks. They sent me a lovely, detailed reply that really put my mind at rest. I don't have it anymore, but would recommend you did the same.

But the ultimate test for me was that I put it over my mouth and tried to breath through it and I could - really easily.

We loved ours so much that when DD outgrew bets, we got her a grand. She slept in that for well over two years. It was pretty much flat by the time we eventually took it away!

Purplerain067 · 28/11/2018 10:38

Our ds was the same as yours, we bought a sleepyhead and he slept much better.

However at 9 months old he had outgrown it and the grande was just too expensive for us at the time. We had to wean him into a giant cot which was a bit of a struggle tbh.

He is 13 months now and sleeps well with a pillow and a duvet, I would personally now only get one if I could afford the grande too as the leap from a snug sleepyhead to a big empty cot was quite huge for ds.

HappyInL0nd0n · 28/11/2018 10:44

Echo what others have said - we've used ours since hospital. Would also recommend you learn how to swaddle tightly. Makes a big difference to newborns, making them feels snug and recreating womb-like conditions, at least until Moro reflex passes. Good luck.

Sunisshining5346 · 28/11/2018 10:53

The sleepyhead was the best product I have ever bought for DS2..I would highly recommend them to all parents.

DS1 was in a snuzpod next to my bed, he constantly would roll over onto his belly from day dot..I spent all my nights awake, panicking that he wouldn't be able to breath, my hand on his chest and rolling him back onto his back.
If only I knew about the sleepyhead then!!

Got one for DS2, who absolutely loves it! He can't roll onto his front, so I can sleep much better..the only problem we have is that he won't sleep anywhere else 😂
When it's nap time..the sleepyhead has to be with us or the tears won't stop!

Bananarama12 · 28/11/2018 10:58

I used the poddle pod when 6 week old DS had bronchitis in hospital for overnight sleeping. I then bought the sleepyhead as he grew out of it. He definitely slept better.

Fashionista101 · 28/11/2018 11:08

Just to throw the cocoonababy into the mix. It was LIFE CHANGING for us. I couldn't recommend it enough 😍

PazRaz10 · 28/11/2018 11:10

Yes yes yes to swaddling too.

SadieContrary · 28/11/2018 11:10

Loved my SleepyHead and I upgraded to the bigger one when DC outgrew the first.

howonearthdoyoucopewith3 · 28/11/2018 11:14

All 3 of mine slept in a Moses basket for the first six months and they have all been amazing sleepers. You can always put the Moses basket on the bed between you. Also, we sometimes used to put the baby on top of the duvet in between us, under their own blanket so they feel safe next to you but aren't under your duvet. Moses baskets are so cheap - I never understand why people get Cribs and nests and stuff as the basket does the same job and you can also stick on the car when you go away so no need for a travel cot!

BlueMoon33 · 29/11/2018 12:00

My baby was the same as yours!

I couldn’t get him transferred from my chest to the sleepyhead very well until I discovered swaddling him, lifesaver.

We travelled abroad when he was 3 months and the sleepyhead fitted in our suitcase which made life much easier on holiday.

At times of bad sleep and going back to co-sleeping, I just had the sleepyhead on the bed with me and I didn’t worry about rolling on to him.

Hopehope20 · 30/11/2018 10:11

Thank you everyone. You helped me so much. We purchased one yesterday and he slept in our bedroom inbetween each feed. Most sleep I have had since he was born. I am nervous abiut the risk of it still...but I fell asleep breast feeding him the day before and that kind if made up my mind. Thank you again xx
